Everything that happened before this moment
Not just wars and famous people
But ordinary people too

3. What do we want to know? How people dressed What they ate
What they lived in
If they had religion
What did they do for past-times
What weapons did they use

4. Sources Things that tell us about the past
Two types of Source: Primary and Secondary

5. Primary Sources Comes directly form the past, survives from that time
Diaries, letters, government records, newspapers, autobiographies
Photos, paintings from that time
Interviews with survivors from the past
Artifacts
An artifact is any object used by people e.g. coins, tools, pottery, bones.

6. Secondary Source Does not come directly from the time
Written or made after the event
Your history book, a biography, a novel set in the past
A film

7. Unreliable Sources Not all sources are trustworthy Some could lie
Some could be mistaken about facts
Biased – take sides
Prejudiced – could make unfair judgments
Give examples of these

8. Measuring Time There are two types of measurement – B.C and A.D
Jesus Christ’s birth is year 1
BC – Before Christ – 87 BC
AD – Anno Domini – 2009 AD
We are now in the 21st Century
Started in 2000, ends 2099
What century was 1769 in?

9. Write a timeline on the board – write three dates – students must add others…
