Fondazione Mondo Digitale is a NGO founded by the Municipality of Rome, Lazio Region and ICT companies as, Intel, Acea, Unisys, Wind ect. FMD’s core mission is to spread the benefits of the use of the newest ICTs among schools and learning environments. In this respect, over the past 6 years it has been leading relevant educational initiatives at local/national/international level , one of the most important initiatives is the project “Grandfathers on Internet”.

Grandfathers on Internet :Main objectives
Innovate traditional learning and teaching methods (lifelong learning) towards adults through the ingredients of the so called 21st Century Education Create a smooth an easy approach of over 60s towards the use of PC: internet surfing, communication through and use on internet-based services Active involvement of young students in the educational process Favor generational exchange

Non mi buttare… Al centro anziani c’è per me! Campaign for the re-use of dismissed PC by companies and public administrations The aim is to equip 140 elderly social centers with two dismissed computers coming from private/public companies. Students from Roman schools join the initiative by providing their technical support in setting up PC anew and installing open source OS or Windows OS and software which is freely provided to schools (FMD is now an “Authorized MAR Center”

From 2006 on, course editions end up with a great event involving all schools and elder centers for the promotion of Digital Literacy and Lifelong Learning. The initiative is also supported by the Municipality of Rome

Grandfathers on the Internet in Europe
Twinning with the Irish government that has just launched a national initiative for the promotion of digital literacy with the project Log On, Learn. The project is supported by Intel Ireland. And … Silver Project: Stimulating ICT Learning for Active EU Elders involving Spain, Rumania and Belgium

Main Objectives of SILVER Project
Development of an online environment to create communities of elders, students/teachers/other stakeholders using/improving the methodology and sharing knowledge (experiences/solutions). The integration of the “physical environment” of current elderly training programmes and this “virtual environment” results in an innovative “phyrtual” environment based on people and knowledge codification. Enrich, translate, customize and implement the current didactical kit about basic ICT skills (1st level) with new 2nd and 3rd level courses about social networking (blog, podcast, profiling etc.) and e-government services respectively; Carry out in depth case studies of the innovative methodological and didactical aspects of the project, in order to deepen knowledge codification and strengthen the educational foundations of the programme. .
