4 Mission and Aim PCOSB is committed to developing evidence-based, sustainable, community-based solutions to childhood obesity among underserved and ethnic minority youth in Broward County. In the first tier, we aim to learn more from those in the community who have a vested interest in pediatric obesity with a special focus on improving the health of underserved and ethnic minority youth and families. 5 Initial Engagement and Progress
School-based BMI screening and surveillance program implemented statewide in Limited research on school-based BMI screenings suggests that notification alone is unlikely to have an impact on pediatric obesity. School nurse expressed concerns of the challenges of BMI screenings. To date, we have had the opportunity to meet and connect with the school principal, school nurse, school administrators, and parents of students at the school. We have learned more about the perceived challenges from each of these individuals and have used this feedback to help inform the partnership. Source: No Kid Hungry Share Our Strength

Identify With roles in education With roles in programming With roles in decision-making School Administrators After fifteen years of experience teaching nutrition and physical activity to youth, Lynne Kunins established FLIPANY as a 501c (3) non-profit organization in She saw, first hand, the ill effects lack of access to nutrition and physical education had on children who were living in low-income communities. Lynne developed FLIPANY to address the health and education disparities in these underserved areas of Florida.

Healthy Kids Broward: Interactive Healthy Living program for youth at risk for chronic disease Holistic program: cooking class, nutrition education, exercise classes, and motivational behavior group sessions Culinary instructor, Registered Dietitian, Behavioral Specialist, Physical Activity Instructor 12 sessions; 2.5 hours Target audience: youth at risk for chronic disease (overweight or obese) and their parents Cooking Matters: Healthy cooking class: equal instruction of cooking techniques and nutrition education 6 sessions; 2 hours Target Audience: Organization working with parents and staff of Children 6 and under (Childcare centers, clinics, etc.) Willing to work with FLIPANY to create a referral system for a sustainable model
