1 Pilot Certificates, Medical Fitness and Airworthiness

2 Purpose Goal: Understand the certificates and medical/maintenance condition required to make a pilot/aircraft legal to fly. Standard: I. A. TASK: CERTIFICATES AND DOCUMENTS The applicant shall explain: Pilot certificate privileges and limitations. Medical fitness. pilot logbook or flight records. Locate and explain: Airworthiness and registration certificates. Operating limitations, placards, and instrument markings. weight and balance data and equipment list. maintenance requirements, appropriate records, airworthiness directives, and compliance records.

4 All Pilot Certificates
When exercising the privileges must carry your pilot’s certificate & photo ID Except CFI, certificates last for life unless revoked or surrendered Must present to FAA, NTSB, TSA, or law enforcement officer Must notify change of address within 30 days.

5 Private Pilot Certificate
Limitations: Without compensation Passengers can pay a pro rata share of expenses (fuel/rental) Privileges: Permits command of any aircraft (with appropriate ratings) for any noncommercial purpose Almost unlimited authority to fly under VFR Passengers may be carried Flight in furtherance of a business is permitted; however, a private pilot may not be compensated in any way for services as a pilot.

6 Medical Fitness Private/Commercial glider pilots must sign statement attesting no medical defects that make them unfit to fly

8 Pilot Logbook & Flight Records
Student, recreational and sport pilots must carry endorsements required for their flight All pilots must log flight required for currency 3 flights in 90 days for passengers ***ref Bi-annual flight reviews Night landings ***

10 Airworthiness Certificate
Displayed and visible to passengers Permanent, but conditional upon proper maintenance Sport (special) are pink White certificates: Normal Utility Aerobatic

11 Airworthiness Certificate
Impose limitations: Limits specified in POH Experimental: No training (except owner) No commercial LSA No commercial (except training) Normal: No spins Utility: Spins Aerobatic: Most anything, limited passengers

12 Registration Requires periodic renewal Every 3 years

13 Operating Limitations, Placards, and Instrument Markings
May be in a combination of: Glider operating manual Placards Airspeed indicator markings Examples Max ground/aero tow speeds Vne, maneuvering speed, rough air speed Flap, Airbrake, Door operating speeds

14 Weight & Balance Data Some limits in standard placards
Minimum/maximum occupant weights Maximum gross weight Some numbers are aircraft specific Basic Empty Weight (BEW) and CG Useful load BEW and CG change: New equipment/repairs Some gliders: Age
