Lesson 3 God gives us his Word

What is in the Bible?

Words to Know testament: prophet: evangelist: apostle: epistle:
Covenant, promise, agreement testament: prophet: evangelist: apostle: epistle: One who speaks God’s Word to God’s people One who speaks or writes the gospel (Good News) One sent by Jesus as his messenger or missionary A letter written to someone

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness

What the Bible is God inspired (breathed into) the human writers

1 Corinthians 2:13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

What the Bible is God inspired (breathed into) the human writers.
God chose every word of the Bible. This is called verbal (word for word) inspiration.

John 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

What the Bible is God inspired (breathed into) the human writers.
God chose every word of the Bible. This is called verbal (word for word) inspiration. All Scripture is 100% true and from God.

Luke 16:19-31 "He [the rich man] answered, `Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' "Abraham replied, `They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'

What the Bible is In it God tells us all we need to know about him and our salvation.

Revelation 22: Peter 1:21 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

What the Bible is In it God tells us all we need to know about him and our salvation. The Bible is the Word of God and is not to be tampered with.

Romans 3: Romans 6:23a Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. For the wages of sin is death The two chief teachings in the Bible are the Law and the Gospel. These two passages tell us what the Law does for us. Question 1 (from Rom 3:20) What does the Law show us? Discuss why we can’t be declared righteous by observing the law. Question 2 (from Romans 6:23a) What have we earned with our sins?

The Value of the Bible It gives us God’s Law (commands), which show that we are sinful and condemned to death and need a Savior. Student fills in answer

Luke 2: John 3:16 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. These passages focus our attention on the Gospel – the good news of our salvaton in Christ. Use these passages to help the student formulate a verbal answer to question 2. Then use the next slide to write the answer in the workbook.

The Value of the Bible It gives us the Gospel (Good News), which shows us we have a Savior and gives us faith in him. Ask the question, “Where does faith come from?” as an introduction to the next slide.

Romans 10: Romans 1:16 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. These passages remind us that the Gospel is the “tool” that the Holy Spirit uses to create and nurture faith. The word power in Romans 1:16 is related to our word dynamite. Help the student understand that the Gospel blasts away at our sin hardened hearts replacing sin and hatred for God with faith and love for God. You might ask what our hearts are like by nature (without the Gospel) to help the student see that sin fills our hearts.

The Value of the Bible It leads us to trust in Jesus as our personal Savior. Fill in the answer in the workbook. Then ask, “What does the fact that Jesus is your Savior lead you to want to do?” Answers would inlcude: Thanking, him serving him etc. Then to introduce the next slide ask, “How can we know what pleases God so that we can express our thanks to him and serve him?”

2 Tim. 3: Psalm 119:105 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. These passages help us to understand that the Bible shows us what is pleasing to God. The Christian can use the Bible to guide his life of thanksgiving and service to the Lord. We can be sure that what we learn from the Bible is pleasing to God because he himself gave it to us as 2 Tim 3:16-17 says. It will be helpful to discuss the terms teaching, rebuking (pointing out error and wrong), correcting (not only showing what is wrong but showing what is proper) and training in righteousness (helping us to see that our righteousness coms from God as a gift). Through faith we are equiped to know and do what is pleasing to the Lord as we use the Scriptures. As Psalm 119”105 reminds us the Word shows us where to step and where we are going.

The Value of the Bible It leads us to trust in Jesus as our personal Savior. It guides us in a Christian life of thankful service. Have the student fill in question four. The next slides will help us to understand how we should use the Bible.

Acts 17:10-11 As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. You could have the student investigate the veress before Acts 17:10-11 to discover where Paul and Silas had been and why they left at night. (A Bible Map of Pual’s Missionary Journeys might be useful to show the locations.) After reading this passage ask, “How did the Bereans us the Scriptures?” They used them to see if what Paul taught was true. Help the student to understand that the Bereans only had the Old Testament. The New Testament had not been written at this time. Highlight the eagerness and daily examination of the Scriptures. Have the student formulate a verbal answer to the question, “How should we use the Bible?” Then advance to the next slide.

How we should use the Bible
Read and study it prayerfully in private The Bereans heard Paul speak the word in public then they when home and examined the Scriptures privately. We also should use the Bible in our homes – discuss ways to use the Scriptures at home or in private. You can include reminders that they use the Scriptures as they complete their confirmation assisgnments and as they commit the passages included in those assignments to memory.

Hebrews 10:25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Previously it was pointed out that the Bereans gathered together publically to hear Paul and then used the Scirptures privately. “What encouragement does Hebrews 10:25 give to us? Be sure to explain the urgency of gathering together – the end of the world (the Day) is drawing ever closer. Also discuss what happens in a worship service. 1) We hear God’s word and our faith is strenghten and we are encouraged in our lives of Christian service, 2) We praise God for his blessings and seek his continued help. 3) We eencourage each other by our attendance and partipation in worship.

How we should use the Bible
Read and study it prayerfully in private Gladly hear and learn it in church, publicly Have the student complete point 2 under the heading: How We Should Use the Bible.

Luke 11:28 "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it." Use this passage to compose a final answer to the question How should we use the Bible. Discuss the difference between simply hearing and obeying the word of God. Obedience includes believing the Gospel as well as doing what the Law requires as an expression of our appreciation for Christ and his righteousness. Don’t leave the impression that we obey to be saved. We obey because we have been saved by Christ. The next slide gives the final answer – if the student did not write an answer to th final quesiton use that slide to provide the answer. Be sure to follow the prayer suggestion for closing which is included for that slide.

How we should use the Bible
Read and study it prayerfully in private Gladly hear and learn it in church, publicly Trust and obey what we learn in it Close with a prayer thanking the God for giving us the Scriptures which point us to Christ and for enabling us to hear and obey his Word. Other prayer thoughts might include a confess of our failures to use the Word properly and a requst that the Lord would enable us to read, study, and gladly hear and learn his Word.
