2 History Part 3 : Exam Style Questions
To what extent was the Weimar Republic doomed to fail? (25) To what extent did women secure the vote in 1918 because of the campaign of the Suffragettes? To succeed with A level History you need to be able to debate an historical topic. There aren’t often in History “answers” – there is often however, a consensus of opinion. The skill with debate is to be able to support your argument with evidence. If you can provide evidence to support your claim, it is difficult for an opponent to ‘win’ the argument. The more detailed your evidence, the stronger your case becomes. The ultimate ‘weapon’ is to be able to show that there are others who support your interpretation i.e. show that you are part of the consensus. With this in mind, you are going to complete the following task. Think of a topic that you feel passionately about – animal rights, university fees, the right to vote, football etc. You have to write an essay on this topic (2 sides of A4 minimum) The essay must be based around the following “To what extent …… should university fees be abolished?”, “To what extent should the voting age be reduced to 16?” The essay must be an analysis of both sides of the debate (although the two sides do not have to be of equal length). Your arguments must be supported by evidence – research your topic – who is saying what? What arguments are being used? How are these arguments being supported? How has this debate changed over time? Try to use a variety of sources – newspapers, books, websites, blogs etc. remember to reference all of the sources that you use for later verification (i.e. you can’t make your evidence up!) Finally, think about your presentation. Good English, appropriate vocabulary, paragraphs etc. 1. If you wish to have your question checked or you are stuck for an idea… me:
