 Pick a topic you are interested in!  Consider possible career choices.  Consider your hobbies.  Consider things you are passionate about.  *REMEMBER* Parents must provide a written consent on topics that may be considered controversial.  Visit as a class Mrs. Livaudais’ website: Surveys

 REMEMBER:  Your research paper is a persuasive paper. You are using your paper to convince your audience to think or do something in particular.  There must be a legitimate debate  Your essential question is what your paper will be centered around. Your paper will answer this question as well as prove it’s claims.  Use the word “Should” when creating your essential question.

 “Should” allows the questions to automatically become debatable.  After you have developed an essential question, make sure the question is debatable.  Is there two sides to this topic?  Yes, parents should regulate… OR No, parents should not regulate… because …  Are the two sides opposing views?  Can I make an actual case for one side of the debate?

 After you have an essential question you must do research to make sure there are sources that will support your claims.  Make sure you are using reliable sources.

 What is a bibliography? A list of sources one has used in researching a topic. This list could include books, academic journals, websites, periodicals, etc.  What is annotation? Annotation is a summary or evaluation.  Therefor, an Annotated Bibliography is?!  A list of sources, one has used in researching a topic, with a summary and evaluation!

 Each source should be cited in MLA format.  After each source is cited in MLA format the annotation element should include three portions.  Part 1: Summary. This part should be a brief summary of the information found in the source.  What were the main arguments? What was the main point of the of the article? What topics were covered?

 Part 2: Assess- The assessment of the source is an evaluation of the source itself (Not the information found in the source like the summary).  Is this source useful? Is the information reliable? Is the information biased or objective? Explain how it is biased or objective. What is the purpose or goal of the source?

 Part 3: Reflection- The reflection should consider how you will use the source in your paper.  How does the source help shape the argument? How will this source help develop your paper? Has the information changed your mind in anyway regarding your topic and/or argument?

 The thesis statement is an imperative part of any paper. A thesis statement is the controlling idea of the paper.  ALL ROADS LEAD TO THESIS STATEMENT.  The thesis statement first appears at the end of the introductory paragraph and it is developed, supported, and explained in the course of the paper by means of examples and evidence.
