8 My developerWorks Groups
What are GROUPS? My developerWorks groups are a community application perfect for facilitating conversations among people who share a common interest, expertise or goal. Groups ENGAGE users… A group provides the means for users to connect with others, develop skills and exchange ideas. It offers the tools that users need to grow their networks, solve problems, and collaborate with others. Groups enable COMMUNITY… Organize and manage relevant information with BOOKMARKS & FEEDS Send announcements via MESSAGES to other group members. Discuss important topics and find solutions to shared problems with the group’s MESSAGE BOARD. Extend the reach of your group with a group BLOG to post the latest group needs, an ACTIVITY to record progress towards a common goal or a WIKI to spur collaboration Upload documents, demos and more via FILES Group owners can, INVITE others to join, CUSTOMIZE the layout, plus, manage the membership and content via ADMIN tools.

9 Group access levels Option Description Open: Moderated: Private:
Publicly available and anyone can join and contribute A public group has a low barrier to entry, encouraging participation. Public groups are a great marketing and communication vehicle to the external IT professional audience. Moderated: Publicly available; users must request to join. A moderated group offers read-only access, where owners can moderate who is able to join. Content is public, yet only members can contribute or post to the message board. Group access could be limited to align with a privileged offering. However, this group offers a higher barrier to entry and users may be discouraged to engage. Private: Hidden and restricted to a particular set of users. This group is not accessed via search, or other group listings. Therefore, it is only recommended for groups that are sharing confidential content or have a business critical need for a gated community.

13 Getting started with My developerWorks Groups
Sign in to My dW. Go to the My developerWorks home page: Sign in via the box in the upper right. Once signed in, click "Edit your profile" in that same box. Read the blog entry, "Best practices for starting groups and wikis." Explore the My developerWorks rich sample group which showcases all the capabilities of a My developerWorks group. Make a plan. Think about which assets you want to use (a group, wiki, blog, file, bookmark(s), and/or activity.). Consider how the resources in your space might map to each of these. As a space owner, you will most likely want to begin with a group, since that is the asset that most closely resembles a space in features and function. The group will serve as your "central hub." This is where you can manage the group's membership, set up a message board, and create and associate a wiki, blog, or file(s) with your group. For these reasons, you should create the Group FIRST, before creating other assets within My dW.

14 Getting started with My developerWorks Groups
Create a group. [Note: You can disallow public access to the group so that no one can see it except you, so don't be afraid to experiment.] Click "Groups" from the top navigation (make sure you're signed in), and click the "Start a group" button. The setup for assets in My dW was intentionally created to be intuitive and easy-to-use, so follow the instructions on the remaining screens, and you should have no problems getting at least the shell of your group set up. Of course, if you do have questions, leave a message on the rich sample group's message board (see URL in Step 3), or use the Feedback link in the footer, and we'll get back with you asap. Start adding resources to your My developerWorks group. Add bookmarks, feeds, wikis, files, activities, and blogs. Use the "Help" link in the upper right corner of the various pages to learn more about each of these assets and their capabilities. When you are finished migrating your resources, let us know. At that time, we will redirect your current space URL to your new asset. Please complete your migration and reply to us by October 13. If we do not hear from you by October 13, we will remove your space from developerWorks without redirecting it.

Own the conversation… if you don’t, someone else will There is no guarantee that everything that is posted in your message board will be favorable to your offering.
