3 The Souls of Black Folk From Plessy to Brown Each chapter begins with a bar from a spiritual; how might they set the stage for the chapters which follow? What does Du Bois mean when he says: “. . . the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line”? Has this problem changed since 1903? If so, how? Why does Du Bois describe himself as a problem? How does Du Bois depict the veil between whites & blacks?

4 The Souls of Black Folk From Plessy to Brown What does Du Bois mean by “double consciousness”? How might one be both Negro and American? According to Du Bois, what are the goals of African Americans? What does Du Bois see as the struggle of the black artist? Why does Du Bois argue that the solution is freedom, the ballot, vocational, and higher education simultaneously?

5 The Souls of Black Folk From Plessy to Brown What are Du Bois’ concerns with Washington’s program? What course of action does Du Bois’ propose instead? What does Du Bois’ time as a teacher in Tennessee suggest about the difficulties of educating Southern blacks? Du Bois ends the chapter by pondering how progress should be measured—how might we answer this? How does Du Bois show the value of higher education? Would America have been America without African Americans? What was Du Bois’ hope for his book?
