1 ANA Definition of Nursing
profession of nursing ANA Definition of Nursing Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering though the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations.

2 Definition of a profession A type of job that are similar in nature and level of skill that can be carried out by one or more individuals.

3 Definition of a professionalism A profession is any job where you need specialized knowledge and training. Nursing combines science and technology with people skills like: communication, problem solving, teaching, and compassion.

4 Qualities of a profession:
1- A profession functions autonomously (with authority) in the formulation of professional policy and in the monitoring of its practice and practitioners. 2- A profession has a clear standard of educational preparation for entry into practice. 3- A profession entrusts the education of its practitioners to institution of higher education.

5 Qualities of a profession:
4- A code of ethics that regulates the relationship between professional and client guides a profession. 5- A profession is distinguished by the presence of a specific culture, norms, and values that are common among its members,

6 A model of professional Nursing practice
The model of professional nursing practice regulation envision nursing practice as 4 level pyramid building toward the outcomes of safe, quality, evidence based nursing practice. 1- the pyramid rests on a base of nursing professional scope of practice, standards of practice, cod of ethics, and specialty certification.

7 2- built upon the base, nurse practice acts and rules and regulations form the next level of regulation. 3- the third level is institutional policies and procedures. 4- the apex of the pyramid is self – determination. Building on the base each level of the model incorporates progressively specific laws and guideline that govern practice, culminating in self determination

8 Nursing as a profession
1- the services provided are vital to humanity and the welfare of society. 2- there is a special body of knowledge which is continually enlarged through research. 3- the services involve intellectual activities, individual responsibility is a strong feature.

9 4-Practitioners are educated in institution of higher learning
4-Practitioners are educated in institution of higher learning. 5- there is a code of ethics to guide the decisions and conduct of practitioners. 6- there is an organization (association) which encourages and supports high standards of practice

10 Characteristics of a profession
1- can be taught through a process of professional education. 2- is basically intellectual (as opposed to physical). 3- Improves its techniques by the use of scientific method. 4-Functions autonomously.

11 Dimensions of nursing practice :
1- clinical Nursing: Fundamental nursing to meet basic needs of clients; specialty nursing based on nursing science and specialty theories and skills.

12 2- Community based health care:
Dimensions of nursing practice : 2- Community based health care: Directed toward a specific population or group with the community. 3- nursing education: Based on nursing science and education theories controlled by the state education and health care guide.

13 Dimensions of nursing practice :
4- Nursing Management: Systematic management of factors as nursing professional staff, technologies, equipment, information, financing. 5- Nursing Research:

15 Nursing practice involves four areas:
1- Promoting health and wellness. 2- preventing illness. 3- restoring health. 4-care of the dying.

16 1- Promoting health and wellness Nurses promote wellness in clients who are both healthy and ill. This may involve individual and community activities to enhance healthy lifestyles, such as improving nutrition and physical fitness, preventing drug and alcohol misuse, restricting smoking, and preventing accidents and injury in the home and work place.

17 2- preventing illness The goal of illness prevention programs is to maintain optimal health by preventing disease.

18 3- restoring health Restoring health focuses on the ill client and it extends from early detection of diseases through helping the client during the recovery period.

19 4- care of dying This area of nursing practice involves comforting and caring for people of all ages who are dying. Nurses carrying out these activities work in home, hospital, and extended care facilities.

20 Socialization: involves learning to behave, feel, and see the world in a manner similar to other persons occupying the same roles as oneself.

21 Socialization to nursing :
The standards of education and practice for the profession are determined by the members of the profession, rather by outsiders.

22 Goal of profession socialization; 1- To instill in individuals the norms. 2- values. 3- attitudes. 4- behaviors deemed essential for the survival of the profession.

23 Factors that facilitate the socialization process
1- Clarity and consent with which the occupants and aspirants (learners) perceive the roles and positions. 2- Degree of compatibility of expectation within role sets-that is, all others who are involved with the learner, such as staff nurses, nurse managers, physicians, clients, and their families or significant others.

24 3- Learning that has occurred before an entry to a position

25 5- Role models who demonstrate the desired characteristics and can enhance internalization of admired qualities. 6- A well- developed and extended orientation or internship program that may include preceptors (people who act as teachers).
