3 Let’s go back for a minute… Wounded Knee 1890
The Ghost Dance was a spiritual movement by the Sioux U.S. troops were sent to end the Ghost Dances and arrested Sitting Bull who in the process was killed The Cavalry rounded up a group of Ghost Dancers near Wounded Knee Creek The Ghost Dancers were told to lay down their weapons One Lakota man who was deaf didn’t understand and refused to give up his gun resulting in a fight with a soldier A shot was fired and the Cavalry responded by massacring 300 Lakota Sioux half of which were women and children The Cavalry lost 25 men

4 Wounded Knee 1973 Members of Oglala Sioux tribe complained that the Tribal leader Richard Wilson was corrupt and they were unable to impeach him AIM got involved and Wilson, knowing there would be some kind of conflict called in the FBI and U.S. Marshals A group of about 250 Native Americans from all over the U.S. occupied the town of Wounded Knee They occupied Wounded Knee for 71 days and engaged in firefights with the FBI and Marshals almost every night 2 Native men were shot and killed and one Marshal was paralyzed by a bullet

5 Wounded Knee 1973 Those involved in the Occupation were willing to die for the cause –most of them were young, in their early 20s The Occupiers were trying to bring attention to the problems of poverty on the reservations When they finally surrendered many were arrested and charged with multiple criminal offenses They were eventually acquitted when evidence surfaced showing the FBI manipulated key witnesses
