5 So,what do we need? We need a solid foundation from which to do our work in violence prevention and safety. We need implementation of the Discipline Foundation Policy: School-Wide Positive Behavior Support

6 This is a policy developed by a collaborative team.
There has been much discussion about who has written this policy so let’s clear this up first! It was a collaborative team of staff (teachers, administrators and support staff) and parents. Input was given by student focus groups, diverse task forces and others. This policy is based on research in violence prevention and system change using the three tiered approach.

7 Eight Key features to School-Wide Positive Behavior Support
Administrative leadership Team-based implementation Information used for decision making Behavioral expectations defined Behavioral expectations taught Appropriate behavior acknowledged and rewarded Behavioral errors monitored and corrected Build family and community collaboration

8 How is the Discipline Foundation Policy organized?
Three phases: Adoption (phase 1) includes ownership and commitment of everyone in the District. Implementation (phase 2) may be 2 -3 years. Maintenance (phase 3) is used to institutionalize practices and collect and analyze data to inform/tailor school practices and support.

9 We are in the adoption phase.
It is the time to learn the vocabulary and become familiar with the skills needed to implement. Be Responsible Be Safe Be Respectful

10 Discipline Foundation Policy
Supports consistency in discipline procedures Guiding Principles and Student Expectations are clearly defined and consistent for all students and staff across the District. Schools must establish what appropriate behavior “looks like” in each setting in the school.

11 Appreciation of Differences
Respect Responsibility Appreciation of Differences Honesty Safety Life-Long Learning

12 Discipline Foundation Policy
Rests on instruction in the area of behavior……staff and parents/caregivers teach and reinforce appropriate behavior.

13 “The culture and climate of a school is defined by the behavior of the staff.” Randy Sprick

14 How do you teach behavioral expectations?
Teach Social Behavior like Academic Skills Teach through multiple examples Teach where the problems are occurring Give frequent practice opportunities Provide useful corrections Provide positive feedback (4:1) Monitor for success Model expected behaviors with students and adults

15 Discipline Foundation Policy
Requires that consequences are matched to misconduct and are applied consistently and appropriately.

16 Discipline Foundation Policy
Requires that behavior and discipline data are regularly analyzed to inform decision making and determine the need for professional development.

17 Discipline Foundation Policy helps to establish…
a consistent framework for all schools so that each school can develop and/or refine a discipline plan that promotes a culture of discipline conducive to learning at every school in the LAUSD.

18 Discipline Foundation Policy helps to communicate. . .
that we are a District that fully embraces and implements research-based practices in instruction AND behavior.

19 The best way to learn about the new Discipline Foundation Policy is to read it!
It is on

20 As you read it, ask yourself:
In what ways does this policy match my own beliefs? What is the impact of this policy on my role with students, staff and families? If my skills match this policy, in what ways can I support others? If not, how can I learn more?

21 1. What is my PIECE in understanding the new discipline policy; owning the conceptual framework and being able to answer questions?

22 2. What is my PIECE in making connections with other staff so that everyone’s work relates to the new discipline policy?

23 Discipline Foundation Policy will help us to get results
Helps students stay in class, on task and learning in a safe, respectful environment to improve student achievement The cultivation of a culture of discipline in every school helps ensure students are “college prepared and career ready”

24 What will schools do as a first step?
Review the school’s existing discipline plan and align it to the District’s Discipline Foundation Policy to ensure: Appropriate behavior is taught, reinforced and corrected. A three-tiered system of support is established. Consequences that are matched to the misconduct are applied.

25 Lines of inquiry to use with existing discipline plans
Is a particular practice Effective? Efficient? Relevant? Proactive vs. Reactive What percentage of time is used to respond to problem behaviors?

26 Everyone has a role In the adoption phase, get to know the vocabulary, the basic conceptual framework and commit to improving behavior as a top priority in the LAUSD.

27 3. What is my PIECE in terms of developing coaching skills so that schools are supported in identifying practices as relevant, effective and efficient?

28 4. What is my PIECE in moving School-Wide Positive Behavior Support forward?

29 What is my PIECE in it? 2. 1. 4. 3. Next Steps:
