1 Heat Absorption Lab

2 Purpose We will be heating sand and water
What do you think a good question is for the purpose or what we are trying to figure out with this lab? What is the difference in the heating and cooling rates of sand and water?

3 Hypothesis and Why What do you think will happen to the temperature of the sand and the water when you turn on the lamp? What will happen to their temperatures when you turn off the lamp? Which one will heat faster? Which one will cool faster? Why do you think this? (write the answer to these in the hypothesis section)

4 Hypothesis (one way to write it)
I think the temperature of the _____________ will increase faster (heat up faster) when I turn on the lamp because ___________. When I turn off the lamp the temperature of the ____________will decrease faster (cool off faster) because ___________.

5 Materials How will you make sure that your investigation of the heating and cooling of the sand and water will be a fair test? Sand Water Digital Thermometers Beakers or buckets Heat Lamp

6 Parts of the Experiment
Manipulated (what WE are changing) Sand or water Responding (what is changing because of the manipulated variable) Temperature

7 Constants (things we will keep the same)
Equal amounts of sand and water Both temperatures set to Celsius or Fahrenheit at the same depth Sand and water equal distance from heat lamp Sand and water must be under the heat lamp the same amount of time

8 Procedure 1. Measure exactly 100ml of water and 100ml of sand
2. Put one thermometer in each bucket up to the taped line 3. Turn on the thermometers and take beginning temperature. 4. When the temperature stabilizes, record the first temperature on your table next to the time 9:00am

9 Procedure 5. Record the temperature of both the sand and water every minute for ten minutes 6. As soon as you record the temperature for 12:30 turn off lamp and DO NOT stop the stopwatch 7. Record the temperature of the cooling water and sand every minute for ten minutes. Record the temperatures on the table.
