Lost hearing in one ear at age 25 due to treatment for an ear infection. Became fully deaf at the age of 29 when a grain of rice punctured the ear drum of her good ear. Learned ASL Founded the Girl Scouts

Started in 1966.Uses both hearing and deaf actors. Based in Connecticut it is a professional theatre group that travels around the world putting on plays in ASL (voice interpreted).

9 Marlee Matlin In 1986 won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She was not born deaf but became deaf at age 2.

11 In March 1988 the students protested the selection of another hearing president for Gallaudet University. They shut the school down until the Board of Trustees (school board) selected I. King Jordan as Gallaudet University's first deaf president.

13 Heather Whitestone In 1995 she became the first deaf woman to win the crown of Miss America. Growing up she attended speech-only schools (oralism).
