2 Dear Parents, Welcome to the school year at Vista del Sol Elementary. As partners in your child’s education, we are looking forward to another rewarding and successful year for your child.

3 7:30 am- Music playing signals students to come into their classroom.
School Hours Kindergarten 7:30-2:30 Grades 1-5 7:30-3:15 7:30 am- Music playing signals students to come into their classroom. 7:40 am- Warning bell 7:45 am- Tardy bell Please bring your child by 7:30 so that they can have enough time to enjoy their breakfast.

5 Homework SIGHT WORDS Sight words will be sent at the beginning of the 9 weeks. Students will have a choice of how to practice their sight words (tic-tac-toe) Students will be tested for their ability to read and write sight words Spelling will be checked daily MATH Math practice sheets will be sent home every Monday Math practice sheet will be returned on Fridays. READING LOGS Reading logs will be sent home on Mondays and checked daily.

6 AVID BINDER Binder is meant for homework and a form of communication between home and school. It is consistent from k-5 Please provide a pencil pouch to be used inside the binder. Binder consists of: Pencil pouch with 2 pencils inside 1 highlighter Sheet protector (for sight words list inside) Agenda (signed daily) Spelling spiral notebook

7 Dismissal 2:30 pm Kindergarten students will exit through the Eagles nest 3:15 pm Students grades 1-2 will line up at the Eagles’ nest. Students grades 3-5 will line up at the front of the school Due to student safety, students should be picked up on time and at their dismissal location. Students are not allowed to wait in parking lot or playground !

8 Tardies Getting students to school on time is top priority to maximize instruction. Consequences for tardies within a four week period: 1st tardy – Student will receive a warning 2nd tardy – Conference with student 3rd tardy – Note Home 4th tardy – Conference with parent 10 tardies within a school year will equal loss of perfect attendance awards and incentives

Make it Count Campaign! Attendance is very important for your child’s academic success. House Bill 5: Students must be present 90% of time in the classroom of class time otherwise, student will receive loss of credit. 10 unexcused absences may result in truancy court. Young people who attend school and study learn more!

Dress Code UNIFORM INFORMATION: Royal blue, canary yellow polo shirt is recommended. White polo shirts will also be allowed. A minimum of one shirt with the logo is encouraged for field trips. Navy or khaki pants, shorts, or skorts with 4 pockets Shoes should be appropriate for P.E. activities (No flip flops or high heels) 4 pocket JEANs are not allowed except for when a student earns free dress on Monday. Few Grooming Tips Hair must be a natural color. (no highlights, green, blue or pink hair). Earrings should not be large or dangling No make up.(mascara, eyeliner, lipstick or gloss) No flip flops or high heels Skirts and shorts must not be longer than the length of the finger tips at arms length. 12 Grading Policy Kindergarten 2 Approaching Grade Leve Standars
Grades shall be based on a developmental scale aligned to state standards and guidelines. 1 Did Not Meet Standard 2 Approaching Grade Leve Standars 3 Met Standard 4 Commended Performance

13 Grading Policy 1st-5th Grades
Grades are based on percentages on a scale of 100 with 70% being passing. In grades 1-6, promotion to the next grade level shall be based on an overall average of 70% on a scale of 100 based on course level, grade-level standards (TEKS) for all subject areas and a grade of 70% or above in language arts, reading, mathematics, science, and social studies.

14 Honor Roll Achievers Honor Roll
A numerical score of in all subject areas and satisfactory grades in conduct for all subject areas. Scholars Honor Roll A numerical score of in all subject areas and satisfactory grades in conduct for all subject areas. Incentives will be available at the end of the nine weeks and at the end of the year awards assembly for Honor Roll.

15 VDS Discipline Procedures
Disciplinary action shall be based on a careful assessment of the circumstances of each case. Factors to consider shall include: Seriousness of the offense Students age Frequency of misconduct Student attitude Potential effect of the misconduct on the school environment Please refer to Student Code of Conduct online at on our school webpage or Vista del Sol’s Student Handbook for more details

16 Utility Bill Reminder Copy of utility bill must be turned in by this Friday, 8/4/2017. Utility bills must be current (June, July, August).
