Wednesday, August 24th Bell-ringer: Discuss with your neighbor, some of the safety rules that we discussed yesterday. Agenda: Bell-ringer Objective QUIZ TOMORROW Predict score for quiz Safety rules Safety Scenarios Objective: Students will continue to learn the safety rules of the classroom. Students will test their knowledge of the lab safety rules with a fun and competitive game.

12 Reading Activity Science Safety Rules
The Bikini Bottom gang has been learning safety rules during science class. Read the paragraphs below to find the broken safety rules and underline each one. How many can you find? (10 minutes) Discuss with your table how many safety rules were broken. (5 minutes)

13 On the first line, write the following:
8/25/16 Safety Rules 6-7 First entry… Date: 8/25/16 Description: Safety Rules Page #: 6-7

Safety Rules With help from Sponge Bob and the Bikini Bottom Gang

15 Rule 1: Always wear safety goggles when working with chemicals.

16 Rule 2: Never reach across a flame.

17 Rule 3: Notify your teacher if any chemical gets on your skin/clothing, or if you get injured.

18 Rule 4: Never look directly into a test tube.

19 Rule 5: Always point a test tube away from yourself and others.

20 Rule 6: Never smell a chemical directly from the container. “Waft” it.

21 Rule 7: Never taste a chemical unless you’re given permission.

22 Rule 8: Always clean up your work area and put back the materials where you found them.

23 Rule 9: Always read and follow all directions exactly as they are written.

24 Rule 10: Never mix chemicals (or perform tests) without your teacher’s permission.

25 Rule 11: Never run or push someone else in the lab.

26 Rule 12: Keep lids on bottles and containers when not in use.

27 Rule 13: Never use broken or chipped glassware.

28 Rule 14: Keep your work area clean and keep all materials (clothing, hair, papers, etc.) away.

29 Rule 15: Wash your hands before/after each experiment.

30 Safety Scenarios Students work in partners or small groups to determine which lab safety rule was broken in each scenario. Groups are only given one scenario at a time...when they think they've figured out the broken rule, they send one member to the teacher to check their answer. If they are correct, the teacher gives them the next scenario; if they are wrong they must go back to their group and try again. The groups are competing against each other to see who can finish the scenarios first.

31 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
The class was performing an experiment that involved using toxic chemicals. The students used gloves to protect their hands. However, Jake’s nose began to itch unbearably, so he decided to scratch it. Answer = keep hands away from face

32 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
Heather and Jay were absent the day that the class started doing an experiment. Instead of reading the directions carefully, they gathered whatever materials they thought they needed and started the experiment according to what their classmates were doing. Answer = follow written/verbal instructions carefully

33 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
Cindy dropped a glass beaker on the floor and it shattered into pieces. She picked up the pieces with her bare hands and threw them into the trash can. Later in the day, a custodian got a deep cut in her arm from the broken glass when picking up the trash. Answer = only the teacher should dispose of the broken glass properly

34 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
During class, Nathan began to feel very thirsty. He saw a beaker with clear liquid and assumed it was water. He took a big swig of the liquid, only to find out that it was actually ammonia. Answer = do not eat or drink anything from lab unless directed by the teacher

35 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
Diane went up to the counter to grab materials for the dissection. As she walked back to her desk, she tripped on a classmate’s bag which was in the walkway. The dissection materials went flying, and ended up stabbing another student. Answer = keep walkways clear

36 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
The class had just finished up an experiment in the garden, and their hands were dirty from the soil. The lunch bell rang and Jana was so hungry that she ran off to the cafeteria without washing her hands. Answer = always wash hands after lab

37 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
Sarah and her lab partner were conducting an experiment that involved using a Bunsen burner (something that creates fire). A strong gust of wind blew into the classroom. Sarah forgot to put her long hair in a ponytail, and it ended up blowing into the fire. Before they could put the fire out, half of Sarah’s hair had been burned. Answer = tie back long hair

38 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
Matthew was a very curious kid. When he walked into science, he saw two chemicals on the counter. He decided to mix the two chemicals, just for fun. Turns out that mixing of the two chemicals produced a toxic gas, which caused Matthew to get really sick. Answer = perform experiments only approved by teacher

39 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
While doing an experiment, Ryan accidentally broke a graduated cylinder. He didn’t want to get busted by the teacher, so he put the graduated cylinder back together as best as he could. This caused a student in the next period to slice his hand when he tried grabbing the broken graduated cylinder. Answer = always report accidents to teacher immediately

40 Answer key for Safety Scenarios
Peter was in love! He just received a love letter from Lois confessing her crush on him. During science class, Peter left his treasured love letter on his desk so that his buddy Cleveland could see it. As they performed an experiment, Cleveland accidentally knocked over a chemical, and it spilled all over Lois’ love letter. It was completely ruined! Answer = keep work area clean and uncluttered
