Presentation on theme: "What does the song make you think of?"— Presentation transcript:

1 What does the song make you think of?
Think, pair, share What does the song make you think of? Does it mean the same to people now as it did in the 1940’s? Why? What do you think Britain stands for? Has this always been the same? How and why has it changed? Have the changes been for the better? Think, pair and share – you have two minutes to consider the questions in silence, two minutes to pair up with your partner and then 2 minutes to share and with the wider group, adding to your mind map any new ideas.

2 British Values What are British Values?
What Values do you think should represent Britain?

3 British Values Now the people in the class to decide which values we should have in Britain are those people who live in a house with 4 or more bedrooms, hands up. No answers from anyone with less.

4 British Values Is this fair?
There was a time when only the rich, known as the aristocracy, had a say in how the country was run. There was also a time when only men could vote.

5 British Values The Representation of the People Act 1918 gave all people the right to vote

6 British Values Democracy
What is this known as? a system of government where those in power are voted for by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state. Democracy

7 British Values Democracy is the first important British value
As we go through each of the values you will add them to your display on British Values.

8 British Values True or False – use your planners
It is illegal to keep a pigsty in front of your house. T It is illegal to run over a cat and not declare it. F It is illegal to put up a washing line across any street.   It is illegal to sing any rude or obscene song in any street. It is illegal to wilfully disturb people by ringing their doorbells or knocking at their doors. An employer cannot give a (subjective) bad reference as this may constitute libel. It is illegal to eat Swan unless you’re the Queen of Great Britain. It is illegal to use a television in Britain without a license.   T   It is illegal to switch on the oven on a Saturday. It is an offense to be drunk and in charge of a cow in Scotland. It is illegal to import Polish potatoes in to England.

9 British Values The Rule of Law is the second important British value
Add this to your display on British Values.

10 Think, pair, share Why do we need laws?
What laws do you consider to be the most important? Can you think of any laws that have changed for the better?

11 British Values Not all countries live in a democracy or have individual liberty. Individual liberty is being free from restriction or control by a government or other power and is the right to engage in certain actions without control or interference by a government or other power.

12 British Values In China in 1989 over 100,000 students gathered at, Tiananmen Square, for a peaceful protest rallying for democracy. The government declared Marshall Law (which puts the army in charge of the government) and sent in 300,000 troops Thousands were killed and injured.

13 British Values Each year people attempt to remember this, however, there is censorship in place. This means the government look at what people are publishing and searching on the internet and put blocks in place. Last year any search mentioning the Tiananmen Square protest was blocked along with the words; “big yellow duck” and “black shirt”

14 How would you feel if there was censorship in Britain?
Some people who were arrested at the 1989 protest are still in labour camps today. - Those who continue to protest are also put into these camps How would you feel if there was censorship in Britain? This was banned because protest leaders were using the big yellow duck (that was in Hong Kong harbour) as a form of protest for democracy. They had also called for people to wear black shirts as a sign of mourning.

15 The people of Hong Kong have taken on “Do you hear the people sing” from Les Miserables as a protest song. As the song plays, with the pictures from the Tiananmen square protest, think of the things you have freedom to do in Britain. What song do you think could represent peoples thoughts in Britain? You will need to justify why.

16 British Values Individual Liberty is the third important British value
Add this to your display on British Values.

17 British Values In the past citizens of China have also been arrested for following Christianity. How many world religions can you name? Are all of these religions visible in Britain? Do you think people have the right to follow the religion or belief they choose? Why?

18 British Values What values do all religions share?
Why is this important?

19 British Values Should those without a religious belief be ostracised or left out?

20 British Values Britain is a multi faith, multi cultural society, it is a melting pot of different races and religions. Use the video as a stimulus for discussion What are the benefits of this? What issues can it raise? How can/should this be dealt with and combatted?

21 British Values Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and belief and for those without faith is the final important British value Add this to your display on British Values.

22 British Values Democracy Rule of Law Individual liberty
Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

23 British Values – Time to get creative
Democracy Rule of Law Individual liberty Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith. You now know all 4 of the most important values in Britain. You need to think about all of these values and express each of them, this can be in the form of: A poem A song A letter to someone from China who has never visited Britain. A short story You could even make a board game that tests people’s knowledge of Britain and our values THE BEST TO BE DISPLAYED IN FORM ROOMS and AROUND THE SCHOOL!!!
