To know that household objects are different today to how they were in the past.

3. What would people have used this for a long time ago?
People had to wash their clothes by hand and would have used a washboard and cloth like this one. They would have to fill up the metal tub with water and then scrub their dirty clothes against the washboard. It was hard work and could take a very long time.

If people wanted hot water for a drink, to fill up the bath or to do their washing they had to use an iron kettle like this one. It had to be warmed up on the stove.

People would have used this to listen to music. They didn’t have CD’s like we do today, instead they had records. To get the music to play they had to put the needle onto the record and then turn the handle to make the record spin and the music come out of the speaker.

This machine is called a mangle .People would use it to drain the water out of their clothes to help them to dry quicker after they had been washed.

People use to have a tin bath like this one. It didn’t have hot and cold taps. People would have to fill it up by hand with buckets of water .Sometimes they would have the bath outside!

People used to have to clean their floors by hand with a broom.

People would have used a flat iron like this to remove the creases from their clothes. It had to be heated up on the fire or stove before they could use it. These irons were made from metal or stone and they would have been very heavy.

People would have cooked their food in an oven like this. It had to be lit with coal or wood.
