Partner resources Curriculum topic Resources required &
My WoW hyperlinks What Who Why When How Partner resources Making the connection Refer to project book (pg17) A lesson insert is a very simple “plan on a page” with a short exercise to link the subject being taught to a career using My World of Work. My World of Work has job profiles, real people stories and videos that can be “inserted” easily into a lesson as a short reference to answer that question that many young people ask “Why are we doing this?” Making a link to a future career can help young people remember that what they learn today will help prepare them in choosing and following a career path in the future. The activities in the Lesson Inserts can range from something as simple as referring to a relevant video on My World of Work to more involved activities involving research in class or as homework. The template shown here has all the essential information on 1 page which makes it really simple for teachers to pick up and use. It includes information on what topic is being focussed on, who the activity is aimed at (the year group) why the activity is being used and how it can be delivered with rough timings as well. At the top right you will find the title of the Lesson Insert which is the curriculum topic it is covering. This Geography example takes the study of Rivers at S1/S2. At the right hand side you can see the resources required plus the MyWoW links of relevant job profiles, modern apprenticeships and a real people video. This activity takes around minutes for pupils to research careers and then discuss the connection between what they are studying and the jobs they have learned about. Teachers can adapt this example to suit themselves – perhaps asking pupils to do their research as homework and then using time in the classroom for deeper discussion. They don’t need to use all the links – they might just use the video and spend only a few minutes making the reference to careers. They are very flexible to suit individual teaching styles. Homework to be completed by next session
My World of Work Homework to be completed by next session Complete the Ambassador Profile Pupils should review the tools they have completed on My World of Work to help them complete the Ambassador Profile. Planning and organising
Ambassadors Skills Session: 2 Planning and organising
38
Success criteria Learning intention
Planning and organising Learning intention I will understand what events need to be organised by the My World of Work Ambassadors and how long I have to prepare for them Success criteria I can create an event schedule for My World of Work Ambassador events that shows what the event is, why it is needed and when and where it will happen
39
Knowing yourself Planning and organising
This exercise should have been completed as homework. Knowing what you are good at and what areas you want to develop, will help you decide which tasks to volunteer for when planning and organising events.
40
Focus on what your audience needs to know – not what you know
Planning and organising Knowing your audience Who are they? How many will there be? What do they already know? What do they need to know? What do you want them to do afterwards? When planning and organising events or presentations it is important to consider the audience beforehand and ask yourself these questions. This will help you focus on what the audience needs to know – not what you know. Activity – complete the knowing your audience activity in the project book Focus on what your audience needs to know – not what you know
41
Planning and organising
Activity: Agree the events and roughly when they will happen. Start filling in the Project Schedule with When, What, Why, When, Where and Who? Agree who is going to book rooms and equipment if required.
42
Finding solutions to problems
Ambassadors Skills Session: 3 Finding solutions to problems
43
Success criteria Learning intention
Finding solutions to problems Learning intention I will consider project risks, ways to minimise them and will be able to use a lessons learned log to demonstrate learning from experience Success criteria I can create a project risks log to consider problems that might occur and what preventative action could be taken I can create a lessons learned log to describe what went well versus what could have been better, then consider what action should be taken for any future events
44
Project risks log Finding solutions to problems
Activity : Review the event schedule / task list and consider what could go wrong. Create a list of project risks/potential problems. Use problem solving skills to decide what can be done to prevent or minimise the risk of them happening. Also consider what can be done if the problem does occur at an event. Refer to project book (pg21)
45
Lessons learned log Finding solutions to problems
The lessons learned log should be filled in after every event to learn from experience on things that go well (that can be repeated) and things that could have been better ( learning from mistakes) Refer to project book (pg22)

Wrong way to hold meetings
Working as part of a team / Taking the lead Wrong way to hold meetings Call a meeting People begin to leave. End of meeting. Begin discussion. Run out of time. Wait for people to show up Decide if everyone is there who will be there Try to decide why we’re here and what we’re talking about
50
Effective team meetings
Working as part of a team / Taking the lead Effective team meetings Build team relationships Set goals and objectives Plan / co-ordinate work Find ways to support each other Share knowledge and learning Find solutions to problems Build on new ideas Give each other feedback Evaluate results achieved Team meetings have to be carefully structured in order for a busy team to get things done. Meetings need to be regular and members must make a commitment to attend them religiously. It's advisable to establish a regular time for meetings and stick to it even if some people are occasionally absent.
51
Effective team meetings: Process
Working as part of a team / Taking the lead Effective team meetings: Process 1 Plan 2 Start 3 Conduct 4 Close 5 Follow-up Clarify purpose Identify attendees Develop & Distribute agenda Set time & book room Invite attendees Check in Review agenda Set or review ground rules Clarify roles Cover one item at a time Manage time Manage discussions Maintain focus and pace Summarise decisions Review action items Request agenda items for next meeting Evaluate the meeting Thank participants Distribute minutes/actions promptly File agendas, notes, action plans and other documents Do actions Meeting process Here is a suggested best practice process for meetings. 1-Plan Good meetings don’t just happen. They are carefully planned. People want to feel that their time is well spent. 2-Start Take some time at the start to set the scene, ground rules and roles 3-Conduct This is where well defined roles will come into play 4-Close Summarise decisions and actions to remind team what has been accomplished through this meeting. Evaluation will help improve meetings- Even a simple WWW/EBI (what went well/Even better if chart) is better than no evaluation at all. 5-Follow-up Get those minutes out asap so people can get started on their actions! Store copies of minutes and action plans where the team has easy access.
52
Effective team meetings: Roles
Working as part of a team / Taking the lead Effective team meetings: Roles Timekeeper – to act as a guide on time scales Minute taker – to record important points and agreed actions Participants – attend on time, for the time allocated and actively participate Facilitator – to guide the meeting process and keep participants on track during discussions
53
Weekly team review: Agenda
Working as part of a team / Taking the lead Weekly team review: Agenda SAMPLE Introduction – Welcome – Agenda & timings Sharing information – update on actions from previous meeting – other important changes/updates Review performance – check progress against schedule – issues and challenges Improvement Activity – ideas for improvement / sharing best practice – update on improvement projects – skills mix and personal development plans Action plan – summary of actions from this meeting Meeting Agenda Here is a suggested agenda for a formal weekly team review in a workplace: (see slide) What should be on the Agenda for your weekly Ambassador team meetings? Discuss and flip answers. Refer to project book (pg 23) Note: Always involve team members in preparation of agenda It should have items that affect the team – not individual issues Try to limit it to about 5 items – 1 hour meeting = 10mins per item. If there is time –finish with a short session that is light hearted/ motivational e.g. social event plans, birthdays, something funny
54
Communicating with people
Ambassadors Skills Session: 5 Communicating with people
55
Success criteria Learning intention
Communicating with people Learning intention I will learn techniques to build confidence when communicating with others Success criteria I can recognise unhelpful self-talk and how it affects my confidence levels I can prepare and use helpful self talk to be able to confidently communicate with others I can describe techniques for building confidence using articles on My World of Work I can practice my communication skills and improve them through peer feedback
56
Who do you talk to the most?
Communicating with people Who do you talk to the most? Who do you speak most to at school/home/work? The answer is you! Self-talk is the little conversation you have with yourself that stimulates the feelings you associate with a situation. How do you explain things to yourself? With positive self-talk or negative? What we say to ourselves radically affects the quality of our lives, and our ability to do things or communicate effectively. Most of us think primarily with a combination of mental images and inner chatter - and get our feelings or emotions from this mental activity. (This is not the only source of our feelings but it's enough to start with.) If you become aware of your thoughts and begin managing them, you will be directly influencing your emotions and therefore how you behave in certain situations.
57
Well, that went okay TODAY, I suppose
Communicating with people Unhelpful self-talk Life sucks! Well, that went okay TODAY, I suppose Typical That’s just like me. That was just lucky How many of you have been afraid of failing something in the past? What did you say to yourself? Unhelpful Self Talk When negative people explain bad things, they internalise them ("It's me again."), consider them permanent ("It's always this way."), and generalise ("Life sucks."). When they explain good things, they externalise them ("That's just lucky."), consider them temporary ("That went well TODAY."), and see them only in a specific context ("At least THIS went right."). How useful is it to always tell yourself "impossible," "more problems," "never," and "I can't?" You will feel less confident and it will show in your behaviour and body language. “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” (from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.) Things went well today Pity it won’t last. I’ve screwed up again
58
Helpful self-talk Life is great! Communicating with people
I’ve done well with this THAT part of the plan didn’t work, but .. Now I know how to do this That was a tough couple of hours but.. The internet connection caused it .. I like the way things are going. Helpful Self Talk When positive people explain bad things, they externalise them (“The internet connection caused it"), consider them temporary ("That was a tough couple of hours."), and see them as isolated ("THAT part of the plan didn't work, but..."). When they explain good things, they internalise them ("Life is great!"), consider them to be more or less permanent changes ("Now I know how to do this."), and generalise from them ("Things are working out well."). When thoughts are confident on the inside you will look confident on the outside. Helpful self-talk
59
Communicating with people
What self-talk will help you behave confidently when speaking in public ? Ask the group to work in pairs to come up with some positive self-talk that will help them feel confident when presenting.
