1 Contingency Contracting Role-Playing Simulation
Feb 20, 2008

2 BREAKING NEWS Navy Seals parachuted into the area at around 3 a.m., and then hiked two miles to free the hostages and bring them home. As counter piracy naval efforts have intensified in the Gulf of Aden and elsewhere, Somali pirates have recently changed their tactics. Rather than holding their captives on ships at sea, the pirate gangs are increasingly taking them to inland hideouts, pirate dens, where they hold them for months, often with inadequate food, water, or shelter. Ransoms have exceeded $10 million in some cases.. And now, some good news…early this morning U.S. Navy Seals rescued two American aid workers in Somalia, Amy McPherson and Buddy Parson. Six months ago, on their way to the airport to leave Somalia, they were kidnapped by Somali pirates and held hostage near the Somali village of Galkayo. Al Shabaab is responsible for numerous bombings targeting the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia and attacking African Union peace-keeping troops, international aid workers, journalists, and others. Conditions in Sudan and South Sudan are becoming increasingly volatile. The underlying causes of the ongoing conflicts are complex and include border disputes, tribal differences, and bitter oil-related disputes. Initial reports indicate that over 130,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to neighboring countries to escape the escalating violence and bloodshed. In other news from Africa, a major terrorist training camp has been discovered in southern Somalia. The camp is operated by Al Shabaab, the clan-based terrorist group that controls much of southern Somalia. Feb 20, 2008
