Colin Powell visits Sudan

USA’s response to Sudan On June 30, 2004 Colin Powell went to Sudan to view the situation. He said there were definite signs of genocide. US began writing a plan for the UN to place economic sanctions on Sudan.

Problems for the US If the United States makes Sudan mad then they may not help us in the war on Terrorism. Since Osama bin Laden once lived in Sudan we need them to help us in the war.

UN Response United Nations World Food Program has provided food to 82 out of 154 refugee camps. They demanded that the government of Sudan disarm the rebels. They have not yet passed a resolution to place economic sanctions on Sudan.

Why no sanctions? Both China and France get large amounts of oil from Sudan. They do not want to make Sudan’s government mad.

Purpose of the United Nations Keep international peace and security Develop friendly relations among nations Solving international economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems Promoting respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms Organize the actions of nations in doing the above things.

UN options in Genocide Negotiate with the people Enforce economic sanctions Send in Military troops

Homework Write a paragraph for each of the UN options in Genocide. In each paragraph explain the problems that could occur if these options were used.
