7 Did you know? Having good ASL skills can make the difference between being hired and not getting the job you want! Many employers across the country recognize the value of second language skills, which can be a valuable addition to your resume. People fluent in ASL are not limited to interpreting or teaching but rather can be found in many fields ranging from big business to retail to public service. The demand is especially high for skilled ASL interpreters. But be careful—you can be held responsible for any miscommunication that arises from inadequate ASL skills.

8 Using “to be” Cornel Notes
ASL does not use deixis for the abstract form of the verb “to be”. You use the abstract form in English sentences like “They will be late” or “She wants to be a physicist.” Signing the abstract for in ASL depends on the topic being signed and whether the concept involves a transition or change. Think about what you really mean by “be” or “to be” and select a sign that matches the concept, as in “I want to be a doctor” or “I will be 18 next month.”

25 I want to know…How do I know which classifier hand-shape to use
I want to know…How do I know which classifier hand-shape to use? Cornel Notes ASL students often find using classifiers difficult because they’re uncertain where to begin or how to describe the object. As you develop “Deaf” eyes and become used to this visual emphasis, using classifiers will become easier. For starters, don’t fingerspell what you want to show! Use your hands and signs you know to draw a visual picture. Don’t worry about finding the “right” classifier but follow your instincts. Remember to work from general to specific details.

26 I went to the zoo… Create a story that shares what people see at the zoo. You should have eight people and eight animals (no visual), what they do with their favorite food, and a comment. Use a variety of vocabulary ON THE COMMENT. Record yourself signing with a voiceover. Bring glossed boxes to class. See example below: fs-BOB IX-he FIREMAN. GO ZOO SEE TIGER. TIGER DO WHAT? MAKE PEACH PIE VANILLA ICE CREAM CL Claw: on top. YUMM.

27 Glossing Complete the chapter 10 glossing unit ON YOUR OWN and turn in. Follow directions carefully!
