Overview Associate Degrees for Transfer Challenges with ADTs Model Curricula Area of Emphasis Transfer Model Curriculum Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

3 Associate Degrees for Transfer
Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act (SB1440, Padilla) created Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs) These degrees are the first half of a 120 unit baccalaureate degree program with the California State University Students completing an ADT are guaranteed: Admission to a CSU campus with junior standing in a similar major to their ADT Will not be required to take more than 60 units after transfer Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

4 Intent of Transfer Degrees
Streamline the transfer of students from community colleges to CSU. Aligned to an intersegmetally developed degree template, transfer model curriculum (TMC). Approved TMCs are posted to c-id.net Chancellor’s Office produces templates for degree submission that can be found at cccco.edu Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

ADT Obligation The requirement to create an Associate Degree for Transfer if your college has an existing Associate Degree in the same TOP code began on August 30. Contact the CO if you haven’t been able to create an ADT. Colleges are not being asked to deactivate existing degrees if they are unable to comply with SB440. Chemistry and Biology ADTs will be due in September 2016 New TMCs require degrees to be developed 18 months after posting Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

7 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
Challenges with ADTs Units! Many colleges have had trouble meeting the 60 unit requirement for ADT approval. What should a college do if they are unable to meet the 60 unit requirement? Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

8 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
Challenges with ADTs C-ID Approval – C-ID Approval has become a requirement for ADT submission, but obtaining approval is not always easy. What challenges have you encountered with C-ID approval? Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

9 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
Challenges with ADTs The TMC isn’t the best preparation for students. What should you do if the ADT isn’t the best preparation for transfer students? Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

10 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
Challenges with ADTs The TMC is different from the major preparation package required by UC campuses (UC Transfer Pathways). Would your college be interested in a solution that met the requirements of the UC Transfer Pathway and guaranteed admission to a CSU campus like an ADT? What other challenges have you encountered? Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

11 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
UC Transfer Pathways The University of California (UC) has developed a common set of transfer preparation (called a UC Transfer Pathway) for students planning to transfer to a UC campus. Completion of these transfer pathways do not guarantee students admission into the UC system! Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

13 UC Transfer Pathways vs ADT
Does not guarantee admission Guarantees admission with junior standing No unit restrictions Restricted to a maximum number of units Does not require students to complete general education Students must complete CSU GE Breadth or IGETC A collection of major preparation courses that does not necessarily lead to a degree Students will earn an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) Complete major preparation package May not include all major preparation courses due to unit restrictions Students may need to complete more than 60 semester/90 quarter units after transfer Students are only required to complete 60 semester/90 quarter units after transfer Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

14 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
Model Curriculum Model curriculum (MC) is a curricular structure collaboratively developed by discipline faculty for a certificate or a degree that specifies the required and optional courses that comprise a locally offered award that is recognized statewide as MC-aligned. Two types: CCCMC Intrasegmental ISMC Intersegmental Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

15 But Why Have Model Curriculum?
Possibilities include: Transfer benefits to students when universities recognize an MC and offer students locally-defined benefits Establish appropriate program consistency in awards across the colleges Facilitate student goal completion by simplifying student movement between colleges Honor completed coursework through reciprocity No 60 unit restriction Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

16 Reciprocity for Model Curriculum
Course reciprocity as established for TMCs. Consistency in MC-aligned degrees across colleges – MCs for degrees must identify the GE options permissible – Local Transfer Transfer for STEM No local graduation requirements. Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

17 Disadvantages of Model Curricula
No guarantee for entry to a CSU campus with junior standing. CSU can require the student to complete more than 60 units after transfer. CSU may require students to retake courses already completed at a community college. Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

18 Possibilities for Model Curricula
Recent discussions with representatives from the CSU have opened the possibility of granting degrees aligned to some model curricula the same guarantees as ADTs Only some ISMCs would grant these guarantees. Impacted programs (like nursing) would be excluded. These are very early discussions, but ISMCs could be created to meet the needs of both the UC and CSU Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

19 Next Steps for Model Curriculum
Work with universities to determine if degrees Intersegmental Model Curriculum can help transfer students. Develop process for recognizing and signaling model curriculum alignment. Establish means of ensuring colleges align with model curriculum in the same way they develop degrees that align with TMCs. Determine whether model curriculum aligned degrees will be offered guarantees similar to ADTs. Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

20 A New Kind of TMC – Area of Emphasis (AoE)
Mandated by SB 440 For majors without a high transfer volume warranting single-discipline TMC Interdisciplinary Single AOE TMC feeds multiple majors at CSU May be used to develop more than one ADT CCC AOE TMCs are general, but local degrees may be specific Unique TOP code, no requirement! Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

21 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
First AoE TMCs Social Justice Studies 18-19 units in area of emphasis 9-unit core Global Studies/International Relations 21 units in area of emphasis 6-unit core, both defined by new C-ID descriptors. Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

22 Social Justice Studies
Designed to meet lower division requirements for multiple CSU majors, including, but not limited to the following: Africana / African American Studies; Ethnic Studies; Asian / Asian American Studies; Chicano/Chicana Studies; LGBT Studies; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Modern Jewish Studies; Native American Studies; Diversity Studies; Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. This list is not meant to be exhaustive. Additional majors, options, or concentrations that focus on a particular population may also be served by this TMC. Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

23 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
Global Studies Designed to meet lower division requirements for multiple CSU majors, including: Global Studies, Global Politics, International Relations, International Studies, International Relations and Comparative Government. Julie ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

24 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
At Your Campus How can you help your faculty develop these new degrees? Educate your faculty regarding AOEs. Designed to serve a wide range of majors Colleges can create multiple degrees to serve various student populations. Local degrees can be very specific for a single major or broad to cover multiple majors. Craig Designed to serve a wide range of majors that individually do not have enough transfer students, but could be grouped together to serve a wide range of major Even though each degree will have the same core courses ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

25 New AoEs Under Development
SB440 requires the development of two additional AoE TMCs by September 1, This deadline will not be met! Law and Public Policy has already gone through the DIG process and vetting is planned for the fall. STEM and Social Work are two additional TMC possibilities that are currently being explored. Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016

26 ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
Under Construction SB1440 and SB 440 work continues Additional AOE TMCs are under development Possible solutions for ADTs that cannot meet the 60 unit requirement ASCCC is working with the CSU to grant guarantees for some degrees aligned to ISMC Exploring ISMC options that create a single path to UC and CSU Craig ASCCC Curriculum Institute July 7 – 9, 2016
