4 How do we judge how well your children are progressing?
The children will be working on the Year 4 standards in the new National Curriculum. How do we judge how well your children are progressing? Sharing learning objectives and success criteria together. Questioning Partners/Small group work Self evaluation TASC/ Using and Applying Guided groups Recorded work Summative assessment

5 Maths expectations for Year 4
Count backwards through zero to include negative numbers, compare and order numbers beyond 1000 and with 2 decimal places. Read Roman numerals to 100. Find 1000 more/less than a given number. Count in multiples of 6, 7, 9, 25 and 1000. Recall and use multiplication and division facts all tables to 12 x 12. Recognise place value of any 4 digit number. Round any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000 and round decimals to the nearest whole number. Add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using efficient written method . Multiply and divide up to 3 digit numbers. Count up / down in hundredths. Write equivalent fractions, add and subtract fractions. Read, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12 and 24 hour clocks. School website –> Our Learning -> Maths support

7 Writing expectations for Year 4
Vary sentence structure, using different openers. Use adjectival phrases (e.g. biting cold wind). Appropriate choice of noun and pronoun. Apostrophe for singular and plural possession. Comma after fronted adverbial (e.g. Later that day, I hear bad news.). Use commas to mark clauses. Use connectives to link paragraphs. Legible, joined handwriting of consistent quality.

8 Reading expectations for Year 4
Give a personal point of view on text. Can re-explain a text with confidence. Justify inferences with evidence, predicting what might happen from details stated or implied. Use appropriate voices for characters within a story. Identify how sentence type can be changed by altering word order, tenses, adding/deleting words or amending punctuation. Skims and scans to locate information and/or answer a question.

10 Homework Mrs Stimpson will give homework out on a Thursday which will consist of Spellings (10-12 in Year 4), Maths and English. This will be returned on the following Tuesday. Occasionally pupils will be asked to complete a research project linked to our topic. The amount of time that we ask pupils to spend on their homework in Year 4 equates to approximately 11/2 hours per week.

12 What can you do to help your child?
Listen to your child read and question them about what they have read. Times tables need to be learned – part of the SATs next year. Use numbers (large ones) where possible. Use Maths in everyday situations, ask your child to tell you the time, what will it be in …? Encourage your child to be involved with money when shopping, using the right amount of coins etc.

13 Useful Information PE – This is on Wednesday with Mrs Oakley. Children will need trainers and track suit bottoms on this day. Swimming is also on Wednesdays in Terms 1, 3 and 5. Please ensure that hair is tied back and earrings removed on Wednesdays. Forest schools will continue. This is a valuable learning experience for children. Further information will be sent out in due course. Children need to bring their water bottles containing water every day. Please keep big bags to a minimum as we do not have room to store things that do not fit in their lockers.
