How will Collins meet the challenges with the increasing diversification? I wonder how the new policies mandated by the government will affect the achievement gap and students academics. Will the new development of Riverview bring more people from Brandon?

Summary Collins Elementary is compromised of two main housing developments, South Pointe and Panther Trace. They mostly consist of single detached homes and townhouses. It is a very family friendly area that includes accommodations such as a pool, playground, and basketball courts. Estates DelSol is another development nearby that consists of single-family and mobile homes. Our data shows that this area has rapidly from 2000 to 2010 and will most likely keep increasing. The demographic of the community closely follows the school’s demographic. The more urbanized the community becomes, the more diverse the population will be.

Quotes: Miss Poulton: (Teacher at local private school)
Lived in Riverview for 18 years “Most of Riverview used to be farmland. There was tons of Orange groves and cow pastures everywhere.” “Many people living in the community have not liked how it has changed over the years. Going from rural to very busy and a built up area. Because of that there has been a lot of push back about it.” Miss Serota: (Teacher at Collins) Lived in Riverview for 12 years What’s important about this community?- “There is a lot of support like if a kid is diagnosed with a terminal disease. The community really pulls together to support those families. Everybody has your back.” Miss Nguyen: (Teacher at Collins) Lived in Riverview for 15 years What partnerships have been developed between the community and school?-“Partnerships are a big way that as a school and as a community we have grown. Particularly as businesses move into the area, the PTA benefits and grows. Certain companies that partner with Collins to fundraise are PDQ, Panera, Papa Johns and most recently Publix.”

Challenged Assumptions:
“More growth equals great opportunity” From Jasmine’s interview, we learned not everyone is totally on board to busier streets and new developments. “ How close is this town really?” One of the best things about this town is the community's support as stated in Alan’s interview “Is this town still growing?” Yes, we captured pictures of new businesses and there is also a new hospital opening up too. Further Wonderings: How much will the population increase in the next 10 years? What challenges will this community face as it starts growing more? How will Collins handle this diverse population and growth? In what ways will Collins leverage the strength of community to improve the school and the achievement gap?
