1 Starter for 5! What is the difference between an absolute and a conditional pacifist? Give an example of a pacifist we learnt about last lesson – explain briefly. Which Christian quote could be used to support pacifism? Give one reason/quote why a Christian might help their local community. Fill in the gaps ‘Let he who has never _________ throw the first __________.’

2 Starter for 5! What is the difference between an absolute and a conditional pacifist? An absolute pacifist believes violence is always wrong in any situation whereas a conditional pacifist may think there are occasions where using violence is the lesser of two evils. Give an example of a pacifist we learnt about last lesson – explain briefly. E.g. Martin Luther King used peaceful methods to achieve equality for black people such as bus boycotts, making speeches such as ‘I have a dream’ and organising peaceful protests. Which Christian quote could be used to support pacifism? ‘Blessed are the peacemakers’, ‘Turn the other cheek’ Give one reason/quote why a Christian might help their local community. ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’. Fill in the gaps ‘Let he who has never sinned throw the first stone’

3 Marked Piece Lesson Learning Objective: To answer the question ‘Explain two religious beliefs about pacifism’ I can identify what makes a successful answer I can write an answer to the exam question I can mark and peer asses an answer

4 Spot the Difference You are going to read three different answers to an exam question on forgiveness. Read the answers in pairs. You need to: Identify the similarities between the three pieces of writing Identify the differences between the three pieces of writing Decide which one you think is best and why.

5 Spot the Difference As students are completing the spot the difference make sure they can see the mark scheme on the board to help them decide which one is the most successful

6 Look back at the best answer – what made it successful?
The Key Ingredients Look back at the best answer – what made it successful? Recipe for Success Give students 2 minutes to discuss in pairs then mindmap as a class – put feedback on the board. E.g. number the paragraphs, stick to the number of marks – don’t write too much, write two explained points, make sure one point contains a religious teaching/quote

7 Target Logs Before you begin writing your answer, open out your Target Log. Make sure you are acting on your target in this piece of writing.

8 Explain two religious beliefs about pacifism (5 marks)
Exam Question Explain two religious beliefs about pacifism (5 marks) Give a reason why some Christians are pacifists, explain it and give a quote/teaching to support it 2) Give another reason why some Christians are pacifists, explain this reason Explain that students will be using connectives to show cause and effect and to give examples in this piece of writing.

9 Be the examiner!

10 Mark these answers… Answer 1:
Some Christians, such as the Quakers are pacifists because they believe that all life is sacred and there is something of God in everyone so won’t do anything to harm or kill people as this goes against God. Some Christians are also pacifists because of the teachings of Jesus on non-violence such as ‘turn the other cheek’ which tells Christians not to retaliate to violence. Answer 2: Some Christians are pacifists because it says in the Bible ‘thou shall not kill’ which means killing is wrong Some Christians such as Quakers are pacifists so drove ambulances during WW1 Answer 3: 1) Some Christians, such as the Quakers are pacifists because they believe that all life is sacred because it is God given and there is a piece of God in everyone which means they won’t harm or kill anyone. Instead they drove ambulances during WW1 instead of fighting. 2) Some Christians are pacifists because Jesus was pacifist so want to follow in his example. He taught people that they should not fight or use violence, for instance, when he said to ‘turn the other cheek’ which means not to retaliate to violence, and when he said ‘blessed are the peacemakers’ which means God will bless those who try to make peace. Discuss as a class what marks these answers would get and why. Think about them critically, what needs to be added or taken away?

11 Peer Assessment Swap your answer with the person next to you. Give them a mark out of 5 and choose one sentence starter from each heading to peer assess their work. Be Kind: I really liked the way you… The most successful thing about this was… Excellent … throughout Be Specific: In the first/second/third paragraph/line… I think…is quite difficult to understand/could be explained better/could include more detail… Be Helpful: Think about adding… Have you thought about… To improve your … try …
