2. What is ceramics? Ceramic is the term for a object made out of clay.
Clay comes from the ground and is mixed with water to become a pliable, dough-like material. At this state clay is plastic.
In its pre-fired state, ceramic objects are referred to as Greenware.
In the Greenware state, ceramic objects are fragile, porous, and not able to hold liquid.

3. Firing Ceramic objects are fired at two different times.
When a ceramic object is fully dry (Green ware), we fire it in a kiln and it becomes bisque ware.
A kiln is like an oven that “cooks,” or fires the clay at high temperatures until the particles partially melt and flow together, creating a stronger state.

4. Firing The second firing happens after you glaze a bisque ware object.
Glaze- is a layer or coating of a powdered glass substance which has been fused to a ceramic object through firing.
Glaze can serve to color, decorate, strengthen or waterproof an item

5. Functional vs. Decorative
Functional Object- a functional object is an object which serves a purpose, like a bowl, a cup, plate, etc.
Decorative Object- is an objected that is created for purely aesthete reasons. It serve no other purpose than being visually pleasing, like a sculpture.

6. Can an object be functional and decorative?
Yes! An object can be functional and decorative at the same time.

11. Sculpture There are 2 kinds of sculpture:
Relief and “In the Round” – (as it appears)
Relief is not completely 3D. It is attached to a backing.
“In the Round” is free-standing. You can walk around it and see something on all sides.
Additive and Subtractive- ( as it is made)
Additive – start with a base and add to it.
Subtractive – start with a base and subtract from it.
