7th to 8th Grade Parent Information

2 Registration Information
All registration information (including this powerpoint) will be available on the TMS website in the eMonday folder under Registration Timberview Middle School Website Students and Families eMonday Folder

3 Registration Process During the week of February 13th students will complete online registration and learn about course choices at school. Directions will be sent home to let parents know how to view student requests, and to make changes if needed. Parents and students should discuss course options and make decisions together regarding course requests. Course guide information is available online at Course registration will be open in Home Access Center for parents and students to make changes online through March 3, 2017.

5 Registration Information
Online registration must be completed by March 3rd. Online registration will CLOSE after this date. If your student does not register by March 3rd, the counseling office will make course selections for your student. Verification letters will be sent home the beginning of April to verify course requests. This is not students schedule, it is another chance to check/change requests. April 28, 2017 is the last day students will be able to make any changes in writing to course requests.

6 HAC Online Registration
Students must login to Home Access Center with their STUDENT username and password. Parent usernames/passwords will not work. Once in Home Access Center, you’ll click on the icon that says Classes, and then on the tab that says Requests (see next slide) Students must register online for a total of 8 credits (one credit will be an Advisory class) plus 2 credits of alternates. It is very important alternates are chosen as we can not guarantee electives. To choose a course as an alternate select “alternate to any course”

Academic Strengths Commitment to Academics Motivation to Achieve Extracurricular Activities Family Support Discuss with teachers Discuss with your student…they’re the ones who have to put in the effort!

11 Pre-AP vs Academic Classes
Have your student pick and choose what’s right for THEM for EACH class. They can do SOME, ALL, or NO Pre-AP Classes! Pre-AP isn’t for everyone, and that’s ok!

12 Required Academic Classes So how do you decide?
A good rule of thumb… If your student is doing really well in a subject (making an A), he/she might do well in Pre-AP for that subject Talk with your student’s teachers: What do they think? Talk with your student: Are they willing to put forth the extra effort? So how do I decide?

13 Required Academic Classes: Math Information
Here’s what your schedule would look like: If you choose Academic Math 7 in 7th Grade… If you choose Pre-AP Math 7 in 7th Grade… 7th Grade: Math 7 7th Grade: Pre-AP Math 7 8th Grade: Math 8 8th Grade: Pre-AP Algebra 9th Grade: Algebra I 9th Grade: Pre-AP Geometry

14 SAVE Process If a student selects a Pre-AP Class and is struggling academically, the SAVE process can be considered. This process is only eligible for Pre-AP classes, and certain requirements must be met: No missing assignments Retesting Attending tutorials Conferencing with the teacher

15 SAVE Process Deadlines for consideration are as follows:
Fall Semester: SAVE process BEGINS after the 3rd week of school and ENDS after the 7th week of school. Spring Semester: SAVE process BEGINS after the 3rd week of the spring semester and ENDS after the 7th week of the spring semester.

In 8th grade, students have the option to begin taking High School Credit courses: Full Year Pre-AP Algebra 1 Pre-AP Spanish 1 Online French 1 Online German 1 Online Latin 1 Online Spanish 1 Online Entrepreneurship Online Principles of Health Sciences Online Principles of Business Finance and Marketing

18 High school credit courses Important things to know…
Attendance: To receive credit for the course, your student must be in attendance 90% of the time. If not, credit must be regained. Grading Policy: Instructors will follow the High School Grading Policy and students will take semester exams. Grades earned in these courses will appear on their high school transcript but will not be used in their GPA calculation.

19 Online Courses Online courses are solely directed by the online teacher. The classroom mentor does not directly teach students. Students will be working in a computer lab with head phones. All teacher interaction will be through the computer (Grades, Assignments, etc.) Students may need to complete assignments at home to stay on track. Students must be self directed/ motivated to be successful in an online course. To enroll in an online course students MUST complete an online orientation course.

20 iGraduate The State of Texas has passed a bill that all students will leave 8th grade with a 4 year high school plan in place. Students will spend time in Advisory during their 8th grade Fall Semester exploring career options. Counselors will be working with students throughout their 8th grade year on their 4 year plan.

21 STAAR Testing 8th graders will take STAAR tests in: Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies 8th graders enrolled in Algebra I will take the 8th grade Math STAAR test AND the Algebra I EOC (High School End of Course exam)

22 Please Note: Math Quest/ Reading Styles
Additional courses of Math Quest and/or Reading Styles may be required if STAAR scores indicate that students did not meet the passing standard. Parents will be notified after STAAR results are in if these classes are required. In this situation, it is possible that students will lose an elective.

23 Physical Education Courses
In either 7th or 8th grade, 1 year of physical education is REQUIRED. If 1 YEAR of Athletics or PE was taken in 7th grade, the requirement has been fulfilled. If not, it must be taken in 8th grade. PE Options: Athletics/PE/Tennis Partner PE (application required)

24 Athletics/PE/Tennis If your student selects Athletics or PE it is a full year commitment. Schedules will not be changed at semester.

25 Athletics Packets UIL Paperwork is required for Athletics participation. Paperwork must be completed and submitted to TMS Coaches BEFORE the student can participate. Paperwork can be found online Students and Families Athletics UIL Paperwork

26 Year Long Electives Band Choir PALS (Application/interview required)

Teaches skills and behaviors for academic success such as organization, study skills, and note taking. Provides intense support through tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships Highly recommended that students are enrolled in at least one Pre AP course. ***Application process required

29 Electives Special Note…
We CAN NOT guarantee ANY elective choices. Electives are determined based on availability Exception: If your student chooses Athletics or Band, he/she will be given those electives because they required a time commitment outside of school, and often a financial commitment as well.

30 Registration… What happens next?
Course requests are DUE online through Home Access Center by March 3, 2017. After 3/4, course requests can be changed IN WRITING through the counseling office. The FINAL day for course request changes is April 28, No course request changes will be made after that time.

31 Registration… What happens next?
Students will receive their 8th grade schedule when they return to school in AUGUST 2017. NO schedule changes will be made once this schedule is received.
