Hands-on Exercise: Check Your Email
Details for tweaking your settings to improve performance: Only download the first 5k of each message Don’t check mail automatically Only download the last 24 hours of mail (Note that these recommendations came from POP environment. They will likely change dramatically in Cisco’s Exchange / GoodLink environment.)
8
Hands-on Exercise: Access CEC
Requirements: TBD Launch Blazer Go to Log in using your CEC username and password Enter internal URL in Address window, or use a bookmark or do a keyword search Example:
9
Lecture [Review]: Installing a New Application
Recommended approach: Find application using Google, Treonauts.com, Palmgear.com, Treocentral.com, etc. Download file (usually .zip for PC users) to desktop machine Unzip/Unstuff Launch .PRC file Synch Launch application on handheld for final installation/configuration Also possible to do directly from handheld, but not recommended (could lose purchased file before synching)
10
Get More Out of Your Treo
11
Lecture: Turn Your Treo into a Personal Audio Recorder
Apps Tested: P.A.R. Too hard to navigate SoundRec Limited features PalmDictate Poor SD support Audacity ? mVoice Best of all worlds
12
Lecture: Turn Your Treo into a Flash Drive
Procure an SD card to store data Cisco Procurement part # = TBD, $TBD Install Card Export II to mount SD card as a USB Mass Storage Device URL: Also need Synch & Charge cable for pushing data to foreign machines OR: Procure the Bonzai USB/SD adaptor for foreign computer access via USB Cisco Procurement part # = TBD, $TBD

Advanced Techniques & Tips
14
Demonstration: http://x500.jpl.nasa.gov Search
Launch Blazer browser ( ) Click on “www” Go to Click the Search button Fill out the form (e.g., fill in the field next to Full Name) Click Search Click on one of the results Click on one of the phone numbers Click on “Dial” in the “Dial Number” dialog box www Dial SMS Cancel Dial Number Go to Web Page elachi
15
Demonstration: Dictation, Transmission, Transcription
Use mVoice to dictate memo No need to speak slowly (see below) Send sound file to assistant If short, send from Treo as Mail attachment If long, upload file from SD card to desktop using CardExport II (or USB card reader), then send as attachment with desktop Have assistant transcribe message using transcription software (allows for easy pause/restart of sound file with keyboard controls while transcribing): Express Scribe (PC) URL: Listen&Type (PC & Macintosh) URL:
16
Hands-on Exercise: Use Phone and PDA Simultaneously
Example: Dial voic system Place call on speaker by clicking “Speakerphone” Calendar While phone call is still active, check your calendar Memo While phone call is still active, take notes Note: Can’t use voice & data connections simultaneously
17
Demonstration: BlueTooth Synching
On Desktop machine, synch everything as often as possible Problem: Frequent calendar updates (many per day) Solution: Wireless synch (of sorts) First, set up MeetingMaker synching on laptop (no other synchs enabled – this is for a desktop+laptop user) Next, switch to BlueTooth (need to perform pairing operation) Result: BlueTooth from Handheld to Laptop WiFi from Laptop to MeetingMaker server Can use at home, or in any WiFi-enabled location Note that calendar synching will be much easier in an Exchange / GoodLink environment

Treo 650 vs. Treo 600 Good news – Treo 650 improvements: Bad news:
Backlit Keyboard 15% bigger keys 320x320 pixel screen (compared to the Treo 600's 160x160) Removable battery Built-in Bluetooth Built-in MP3 player 2X improvement in processor speed (useful for things like video capture and DVD playback) Bad news: Hardware accessories not compatible between Treo 600 & 650 Sad news (Treonaut criticisms compared to ideal Treo): Treo 650 has no built-in WiFi, same old camera, same antenna, one slot for SD & SDIO, no memory improvement
24
Requirements & Cost for Upgrading to Treo 650
Existing Treo 600 user Had Treo 600 > 1 year Cost (Cingular): Undiscounted cost is $600 $350, one-time cost, with 1 year contract
25
Accessories I’ve tested
Check for updates Don’t like: Hard case: too bulky Too expensive, but would be a nice gift: Vaja leather case Like: Pen/stylus replacement CardExport II 1GB SD card (2GB now available) retractable synch & charge (S&C) cable Documents 2 Go Premium 7 (ordering/price info) BlueTooth headset (Motorola HS-850) Bonzai SD/USB adaptor (hard to open at first) extra battery (never need it with the S&C cable) car power adaptor screen protectors P.A.R. Headset beltclip pouch
26
Still Need to Cover Cingular firmware updater (DUN decrippling, memory block size reduction, VersaMail update) Using DUN for laptop access anywhere GPRS or Edge is available eBook reading VPN client: Beta testing in progress with MovianVPN Java (J2ME) Flashlight Lighter (just kidding) Tap dialing conference room phone number Shopping list: Just for Fun (photo viewer, MP3 player, movie recording, DVD viewing, headphone adaptor, headphones, SD to CF adaptor, USB multicard reader) Miscellaneous (DiddleBug, vindigo, WebViewer, Remote PC control)
