3 Background Shape of Caring Review 2015 recommended bridging role between unregulated support role and RN Recognised the need for defined principles of practice, a competency framework, and a defined career pathway RN workforce is an all-degree profession and the NA role is to supplement, not substitute, clinical decision-making

4 What is a Nursing Associate?
New Band 4 role working in Health and Social Care Developed in England Will work with RN to complement the existing teams in primary, secondary, community and social care Help to plan, coordinate and deliver care NMC have been asked to regulate the role

5 A Nursing Associate… Is a team player
Will actively contribute to holistic care Will work to a nationally-recognised code of conduct Can deal with non-routine and unpredictable nature of the workload

6 A Nursing Associate… Will be able to integrate an academic and work-based programme of learning Is aware of the limitations of their practice Reflects on their practice Has excellent communication skills

7 What does the training involve?
A 2-year programme of study and clinical practice Leading to a level 5 Foundation Degree One day each week at University of Derby (or Chesterfield Campus) Work in Clinical practice as member of nursing team Work-based learning Supervisor – sign off competencies Two 4-week placements each year - hospital, close to home, and home.

8 What do I need to be able to apply?
Work full-time during the training Minimum maths and English GCSE A-C (or level 2 equivalent qualifications) Ability to work at level 5 NVQ/QCF Level 3 is desirable Be able to travel between placements (8 weeks each year) Values and behaviours Role model

10 What do I need to think about?
Travel expenses are not paid (but you will be band 3 during training) Good supporting information We expect a lot of interest in this role – are you the right person for it? Talk with your manager, your Clinical Educators It’ll be hard work!

11 FAQs Can I become a Registered Nurse? Will the role be regulated?
What happens at the end of the training? Which areas will have Trainee Nursing Associates? What happens if I leave the course? What happens if I fail the course?

16 What is a Foundation Degree?
Developed in response to clinical request it is 2 year foundation degree Equivalent to 1st two years of a traditional degree (Level 5 qualification) Facility to ‘top-up’ to a BSc

17 Aims of the course Develop a broad knowledge and critical understanding of the role of support staff within the context of the learner’s own organisation and the wider health and social care setting; Enable learners to develop the higher level knowledge, skills and attributes to perform the role; Develop learners’ knowledge and critical understanding of theory underpinning their workplace practices, fostering reflective practice and recognition of the limits of their scope of practice; Deliver a meaningful route into higher education which gives learners and employers the ability and flexibility to negotiate their learning and desired outcomes. 17

Option Modules Mental Health Across the Lifespan Working with Disability Work Based Study Learn more about common mental health conditions and how they impact on the individual. Consider how you can help to manage mental health conditions in your own scope of practice Explore disability and the impact this has on your service users and carers. Consider strategies for the health and well-being of these individuals and how you can offer support Identify an area of your work which you want to explore in more depth. Set your own learning outcomes and work independently with support from University and employers Or something else?
