Server for the masses
We started changing the game when we took on Big Iron and Unix. The NT 4 release helped customers migrate to the next generation of computing, which enabled organizations to use commodity hardware for file/print and company wide applications.
Enterprise Era and Y2K
With the next version, we dropped the NT name and gave the product a name it deserved: Windows Server As we entered the Y2K hubbub, we also moved into the Enterprise era and brought five 9’s of reliability, scalability and accessibility to the market. Windows Server 2000 introduced Active Directory, group policies, enterprise wide security policies and centralized groups and permissions. Three years later, Windows Server 2003 launched the .NET framework, which set off an explosion of native apps that developers built using ASP.NET, VB.NET, and C#.
Datacenter Era and moving to the cloud
Windows Server 2008 moved us into the datacenter era, offering virtualization in the OS with Hyper-V, the Server Core installation option and much more. Windows Server 2012 brought us into the cloud era, by opening the door to any app on any cloud. As we approach the launch of Windows Server 2016, we look forward to helping customers take the next step. For many, it means beginning to move to the cloud. For others, it means adding more security and efficiency in their on-premises IT systems. We’ve designed Windows Server 2016 to support both goals, so customers can move to the cloud at the pace that works for them.

The Operating System Opportunity
88% of servers end up running Windows Server. But often, Lenovo’s attach rate at the point of sale is 8%-20% depending on the region. If we fail to ask the question at the time of sale, we’re likely forfeiting revenue. While some customers may have a volume license agreement, many do not, and it may still be that case that the Lenovo option—ROK—is better. The fact is, hardware without an operating system doesn’t do anything. This is why it is important to discuss ROK OS licenses when you are talking about Lenovo Servers.

Ways to Purchase a Software License
Notes:
There are four key ways to buy a Microsoft license depending on the volume of licenses needed for your organization today and in the future.
The Full packaged product, or FPP, is purchased from retailers. Typically 1 box = 1 license.
With the OEM, or Original equipment manufacturer, the license(s) come preinstalled on a new computer and the software is associated with the device.
Volume Licensing agreements are purchased directly from Microsoft or through resellers and there are a variety of agreements to suit different types of organizations.
Cloud services, or cloud services, are hosted solutions available from service providers, such as Microsoft Cloud services.
How the products may be used are outlined in Product use rights which vary by product, product version, AND by the channel through which the license is acquired.

Device CALs
