1 MODERNIZE AND SIMPLIFY WITH UNITY ALL-FLASH
Notes to the presenter: The scripting in this deck is written to provide you with one or two talking points (and in some cases a few more) on each slide. It is not intended to be read “to each slide”. This deck is also best viewed in slide view mode. Some background: EMC's new Unity product line is a new offering from EMC. It sets new standards for storage with compelling simplicity, a modern design, affordable prices, and flexible deployment – to meet the needs of resource-constrained IT professionals in large or small companies. The Unity family consists of: Unity (purpose built): A modern midrange storage solution, engineered from the ground-up to meet market demands for flash, midrange affordability and outrageous simplicity. The Unity platform is available in four All-Flash and four Hybrid configurations. VBLOCK (converged systems): Unity is available in Va CE VBLOCK 350 configuration. UnityVSA (virtual): UnityVSA allows the advanced unified storage and data management features of the Unity family to be easily deployed on a VMware ESXi server, for a software defined’ approach.

2 Flash – a fundamental market shift ...
2016 Annual Revenue in Billion $ HARD DISK DRIVES As you know, HDDs has been the mainstay of the storage industry for sometime now. And although EMC introduced support for flash in 2008, we see growth rates of flash far exceeding those of HDDs. And it wont be long now before more Flash revenue is shipped than HDDs – as shown by the Wikibon study. Dell - Internal Use - Confidential 2 Source: © Wikibon Server SAN Research Project 2015

3 The EMC Unity family ALL-FLASH HYBRID
Flexible deployment options with all inclusive software UNITY 500F UNITY 300F UNITY 600F UNITY 400F ALL-FLASH UNITY 400 UNITY 500 UNITY 600 HYBRID UNITY 300 VIRTUAL & CONVERGED EMC introduces you to Unity – a new storage solution that’s setting the new standard for midrange storage. Unity has been designed and engineered from the ground-up to meet the mid-tier market demands for flash, affordability, and outrageous simplicity that we will discuss in the presentation And all Unity models come with built-in data protection, cloud-based management, and all inclusive software to deliver the best midrange economics – price, density, and TCO. First, Unity all flash comes in four scalable models: On the left we have the 4 Unity All Flash configurations, depicted with the chrome logo. The Unity 300F, 400F, 500F and 600F. These support SSDs only. For every All-Flash configuration there is also a corresponding Hybrid model. On the right we have the 4 Unity Hybrid configurations, depicted with the chrome and Blue logo. The Unity 300, 400, 500 and 600. These support a traditional mix of SSDs and HDDs. At the bottom there’s the UnityVSA – a virtual storage appliance And then there are VCE Vblock’s based on Unity systems Unity All-Flash and hybrid converged models are offered as a Vblock System 350 and a VxBlock System 350 Note: The Unity (F) All-Flash configs do not support adding in HDDs to convert them into Hybrid arrays. And the Hybrid arrays, only support up to 50 flash capacity. This is different from VNX2. Also note that all the new features we are going to cover, features like HTML5 support, REST-API, Native unified replication, native VVols, new drives etc. All this goodness further differentiates Unity from VNX, i.e. you will not get this on VNX2 arrays.

4 Simplify your storage lifecycle
From purchase to manage to support – we made it easy SIMPLE TO BUY ALL-INCLUSIVE SOFTWARE STREAMLINED ORDERING SIMPLE TO SETUP RACK & STACK IN MINUTES 15 MINUTE CONFIG WIZARD SIMPLE TO USE NEW HTML5 EXPERIENCE VMWARE AND MICROSOFT INTEGRATION SIMPLE TO SUPPORT CLOUDIQ PLATFORM PROACTIVE ASSIST ECOSYSTEM Unity is SIMPLE across the entire lifecycle of storage – Simple to buy with all-inclusive software and simple web-based ordering Simple to setup – you can rack and stack the system in minutes and with the configuration wizard you can be up and running in 15 minutes Simple to use with a new improved HTML5 based experience (no more java!!) and tight VMware and Microsoft integration means you connect easily to the most common environments. Simple to support with a CloudIQ-internet enabled platform and proactive assist capabilities- we find out when there are problems on the systems before customers do! Note: CloudIQ is a software-as-a-service cloud management dashboard that provides intelligent analytics about performance, capacity, and configuration for health-based reporting and remediation. It will be in direct availability at the time Unity is generally available. Proactive Assist is a Marketing term that includes all the proactive servicing Unity enables, including the new ESRS (Virtual Edition (VE) and ESRS VE Gateway), The carrousel that highlights hardware faults, the chat, the how to videos, etc.

5 Proactive management and support
Get connected and resolve problems faster PROACTIVE ASSIST SELF SERVICE PORTAL UNISPHERE CENTRAL CENTRALIZED MANAGEMENT CLOUD IQ DASHBOARD & MANAGEMENT PLATFORM Let’s look a little closer at what we mean by Proactive Assist and CloudIQ management and where Unity is expanding on the simplicity theme that takes a huge market leap ahead toward management simplicity    First, Unity includes Proactive Assist, this is a self-service and support portal within Unisphere with a set of robust on-line community activities such as live chat, videos, documentation, and more), direct parts ordering, system views, and dial home assistance via ESRS. Unity also introduces CloudIQ, this is a software-as-a-service management solution that collects Unity system data and provides actionable insights into performance, utilization, and configuration based on analytics via an online health-based reporting dashboard and includes: Dashboard widgets – e.g. Health, Alerts, Pool Predictive Capacity Aggregated Listings – e.g. Alerts, Systems, Pools Detailed Views of individual Systems, etc. CloudIQ will not be part of the Unisphere suite – it’s accessed through a browser - but there is no additional charge for Unity customers with a valid support account. CloudIQ is being offered in an Early Access program and customers who want to participate can get registration information via the Unity ECN site on May 2. Early Access participation means you must have a valid Unity Support Contract, an accepted EULA with EMC, and to get the full benefits of Proactive Assist and CloudIQ, customers need to enable and deploy ESRS, the dial home feature. With Unity, we have “virtualized” ESRS and deployed it in a “Docker” container to make ESRS simpler to connect via Unisphere In fact customer can provision it as part of the initial configuration wizard in Unisphere

6 CloudIQ overview Cloud-based solution to monitor and manage unity environments Analytics Planning and Optimization Operational Dashboard Monitoring, Alerting, Reporting Pro-Active Health Score Proactive Support + Recommended Remediation And then there is CloudIQ, and remember, CloudIQ is only available through a Early Customer Access program. CloudIQ is expected to GA in Q CloudIQ will provide Operational dashboards for monitoring, alerting and reporting. It will provide pro-active health scores and remediation As well as proactive analytics for planning and organizational benefits.

You can see the wealth of front end and back end connectivity that the systems offer.

8 Powerful, simple hardware
Before & After (VNX5800 to Unity 600F) BEFORE AFTER IMPROVEMENT FORM FACTOR 7U 2U 71% CABLES 30 6 80% POWER CONSUMPTION 1495W 703W 53% RACK INSTALL 60 min minutes 97% PERFORMANCE: 80:20 read : write 100% read 101K 124K 295K 372K 3X Test Profile: Thin LUN, Small Block Random Workload (8KB), All SSDs VNX5800 UNITY 600F When we say this is a totally new platform, here is what we mean from a hardware perspective. Look at how much we have reduced the form factor. The hardware leverages the Intel Haswell chip set in multicore configurations and 12Gb SAS backend. With up to twelve cores of Intel processing power per Unity storage processor, a significant amount of system memory, and the very efficient Unity OE, there is no need for physical hardware specific to block functions, physical hardware specific to file functions or connecting management hardware. Whether you have a Unity 300 system or Unity 600 system all storage functionality for LUNs, file systems and VMware VVols is accomplished in a system that takes up just 2U of rack space. Beyond that, you just add additional drive enclosures for any incremental storage capacity that is needed.

9 SIMPLIFIED MIGRATIONS
Simple built-in migration For seamless migration from VNX1 and VNX2 BUILT IN SIMPLIFIED MIGRATIONS VNX1/VNX2 UNITY FC, iSCSI, AND NFS MIGRATION FROM VNX MIGRATES LUNS, FILESYSYTEMS, QUOTAS, ACLS, AND EXPORTS BUILT-IN SOLUTION: SELF-SERVICE WITHOUT REQUIRING ANY THIRD PARTY TOOL TRANSPARENT TO FILE APPLICATIONS, MINIMALLY DISRUPTIVE FOR BLOCK Unity has native file migration feature for NFS File Import feature is added to Unity,. It supports VDMs and NFS File Systems from VNX and VNX2 systems are supported VDM migration to NAS Server NFSv3 support Transparent to host IO Rollback and Summary Reports provide troubleshooting assistance Notes: Some preparatory work is required on the VNX system, but creation, monitoring, and cutover are all managed in Unity (Unisphere, UEMCLI, REST API) How it works: When started, the import session will create the destination file system and perform a baseline copy After the baseline copy is complete, host access can be cutover to the Unity system The baseline copy consists of: NAS Server and File System attributes “Cold” data – data not updated in the last 24 hours From this point, cutover can be performed Delta copies of remaining and modified data will continue until the cutover After cutover, data is written to both the source VNX and Unity system until the session is committed The full copy will complete in the background. During this time new changes will be kept in sync between VNX and Unity. Unity also has native SAN Copy import of block resources from a VNX1/VNX2 system . SAN Copy is: Pre-loaded onto VNX systems Free to use Mature program – resources (documentation, videos, etc.) already exist This feature takes the ease-of-use a step further by integrating the SAN Copy configuration & execution into Unity Note: Unity continues to only support SAN Copy in push operations and the SAN Copy engine still runs on the VNX.

10 Inline efficiencies - compression
70% TYPICAL SPACE SAVINGS 45% 40% 35% VIRTUAL SERVERS FILE (MS EXCHANGE) DATABASE SET IT AND FORGET IT: DYNAMIC BALANCING OF PERFORMANCE AND SAVINGS INTUITIVE SAVINGS REPORTING: AT LUN, POOL AND SYSTEM LEVEL SINGLE CLICK ENABLE: CONVERT EXISTING THIN BLOCK LUNS But now you may ask, “how can you call a system truly all-flash designed if you don’t address in-line efficiency services?” Well, the good news is that Unity All-Flash is designed to support in-line efficiencies, namely In-Line Compression, later. We will be introducing, through a zero dollar Non-Disruptive Software Upgrade, In-Line Compression support for block based LUNs. What makes this story even better, is that with this support, the system will go back and compress existing block based data and return additional freed up capacity Note: With In-Line Compression, we expect to see a 2:1 savings, but understand that the total savings will be dependent on specific workload types.

Start High, then Auto-Tier Maximizes initial performance; then optimizes for TCO 2. Auto-Tier Optimize TCO and performance e.g., databases with varied levels of activity among tables, or file systems with varied levels of activity across files 3. Highest Available Tier Maximize performance e.g., high-performance OLTP system 4. Lowest Available Tier Reduce TCO e.g., archived or infrequently accessed data STORAGE POOL SSD HDD As its name implies, FAST VP is a completely automated feature and implements a set of user defined policies to ensure it is working to meet the data service levels required for the business. Typically FAST VP will move data between Flash, SAS and Near-Line SAS media as it ages and becomes less active, although customers may decided to configure a separate pool and use FAST VP with just a small amount of SAS and Near-Line SAS for optimized TCO for their 3rd Tier applications. FAST VP policies control how FAST VP should apply to individual LUNs in a storage pool. The tiering policy chosen, also affects the initial placement of a LUN’s slices within the available tiers. Initial placement with the pool set to auto-tier will result in the data being distributed across all storage tiers available within the pool, based upon the relative capacity of each tier available in the pool. LUNs set to highest available tier will have their component slices placed on the highest tier that has capacity available. LUNs set to lowest available tier will have their component slices placed on the lowest tier that has capacity available. FLASH First then Auto Tier will initially place the slices on the fastest tier and then over time the slices will migrate to their rightful place in the hierarchy. Additionally, a relocation schedule is set and the rate of data relocation defined. This allows the relocation process to automatically run at a quiet time of the day and to minimize the impact to the ongoing workload. Typically the relocation process is scheduled every 24 hours but it is possible to relocate data as frequently as you want, although there is a tradeoff between system resources and frequency of re-location. FAST VP also supports manual relocation should a relocation be required outside of the regular schedule. FAST VP Operational Process: Statistics collection—cumulative I/O history (reads and writes) Weights recent I/O history above longer-term I/O history Maintains relative ranking of all data in pool, based on tier preference and I/O history: After pool creation, detected in next poll cycle for inclusion in statistics collection Occurs every hour Relocation estimate—“amount to move up/down/within”—updated every hour Tier utilization Algorithm attempts to gain greatest utility from highest tiers As space is needed, hot data will replace cooler data in top tiers Relocation granularity Sub-LUN “slices” are 256MB granularity Adding a tier or more capacity results in data relocation for optimized performance Can be used for continuous pool rebalancing
