One of the requirements of any dyslexia program is that it be orton gillingham based, multisensory, and explicit instruction. Megawords is this kind of program. It contains structured lessons, and is a systematic approach to morphology, syllabication, and word study.

3 Structure of the material

Decoding and encoding Using words in context Building word meaning Review sections to reinforce concepts Content area reading passages with comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency practice

7 Teacher Guides Provide direct instruction according to the 6 step instructional plan Clearly labeled steps, sub skills, objectives Suggestions for differentiating instruction Assessment tips for progress monitoring Reproducible assessment and recording forms Answer Key

8 Placement and Progress Monitoring
Easy to administer Teacher records student responses while student reads from the Student Reading Copy. Results analyzed to determine appropriate level for student When assessing students, they will test 1:1, you will review results and place them accordingly. If necessary, bring kids down a little to meet other kids’ levels, rather than pushing them up to high. Review the placement test—practive with partners

9 The Six Step Lesson Work with one syllable words and word parts.
Work with the combined word parts. Work with the whole word.

10 The Six Step Lesson Work with the word in context.
Monitor progress to increase reading and spelling accuracy. Monitor progress to build reading proficiency. Review handout of Six Step Lesson—What do you do at each step in reading and spelling?

11 Review the Learning Steps
Sample lesson reviewed step b step

12 Practice with Partners
Partners will practice administering Assessment of Decoding and Encoding Skills, taking turns being teacher. Place students according to results

13 Questions Exit ticket questions

14 Reading & Spelling Skill Check
After steps 1-4 successfully completed Students must repeat until 90% accuracy Students record results in the Accuracy Checklist—record as fraction, shade when 90% mastery

15 Building Reading Fluency
Word Proficiency Read a selection of list words with 90% accuracy Fluency Read the list words in a content area reading passage-words from current list as well as concepts previously covered After reading passage, student answers vocabulary and comprehension questions Students read passage until fluency goal met Passages are approximately150 words. Students have individual fluency goals. Students will practice repeated reading of fluency passage until their personal fluency goal has been met. The teacher’s guide has the fluency passages with the word count on them so that the teacher can mark errors during reading and keep track of student progress.

16 Students Track Progress
Word Proficiency Graph Record performance on timed readings, number of words correct per minuteand number of errors Fluency Graph Record performance for passage reading, indicating number of words correct per minute and number of errors Included in Teacher’s Guide.
