Data Point Analysis- what are some characteristics of ‘good’ science? Article Analysis and Questions Turn in: lab safety sheet Homework: 1. H. pylori Nobel Prize speech 2. Video Reflection Questions (on website, answer in notebook)

2 Nature of Science Meaning: How we ‘do’ science, what good science is, what science isn’t Importance? Why are we doing this first? What are some misconceptions around this?

3 Mystery Discs DO NOT OPEN
Each disc has a specific pattern inside of it- complete the outline with your group to determine the pattern and structure inside the disc without opening it

4 Discussion Questions How does this activity reflect the nature of science? What are some things you should expect when doing experiments or labs this year?

5 Data Points With your elbow partner, read through the ‘data point’
On a piece of chart paper … Summarize the study Explain the type of data collected Explain the graph used (why did the author pick that graph) Describe some characteristics of ‘good science’ that were evident in that study

6 Article Analysis Abstracts are your friends
Focus on taking away big ideas Don’t stress about words you don’t know Don’t stress about scientific methods you don’t know Focus on guiding questions to help you Remember: All experiments start with research, meaning reading in science is VERY important

Chp 52 Reading and Notes (use note guidelines, due 9/5) Turn in: H. pylori video reflection question answers

8 Textbook Notes All sections outlined and summarized
Each section should have 4-5 bullets or sentence that summarize the main idea All essential vocabulary written and defined Only define words new to you, or words you think are crucial to understanding the main ideas of the chapter Do NOT define every single bolded word Summary of how the section connects to the four ‘big ideas’ All topics should connect to all the big ideas, but some connections may be more obvious than others Find the four main ideas in the front of your textbook Any graphs and/or data explained Remember- most of your test questions will be interpreting graphs and data The more you practice this skill, the better you will do on the test Write questions or comments in the margins I really will read these to measure your understanding, figure out what topics you thought were interesting, and answer any questions you might have.

12 Standard Error of the Mean
Standard deviation deals with the deviation from each individual measurement from the mean Standard error of the mean deals with the deviation of the mean from the ‘true’ mean

13 2SEM On the AP exam you will be expected to understand why we use ‘2xSEM’ Multiplying the standard error of the mean by 2 means we will be hitting 95% of our measurements Also called a 95% confidence interval

16 Error Bars If error bars overlap on the graph then the means are not statistically different If they DO NOT overlap then the means ARE statistically different
