1 Non-Renewable Energy

2 The Sun - the ultimate source of energy
The original source of most energy resources. Plants store the Sun’s energy in photosynthesis. Animals then eat the plants.

3 The Sun - the ultimate source of energy
natural gas oil The Sun The original source of most energy resources. coal biomass waves wind food

4 Energy sources – Britain (2002)
Source – DTI website ‘Energy in Brief July 2003’

5 Non-renewable energy resources
Non-renewable types of energy can only be used once. There is a finite amount of these materials on the Earth so they will run out eventually. Non-renewable resources make up approximately 95% of the world’s energy. fossil fuels nuclear coal gas oil fuelwood Non-renewable energy biomass mineral

6 Impact of burning fossil fuels – Greenhouse Effect

7 temperature record, rising sea levels
Effects of Global Warming? Environmental temperature record, rising sea levels increase in the frequency of some extreme weather conditions (heat waves, droughts, forest fires. Social agriculture and food production around the world due to: the effects of elevated CO resulting in decreased crop yields. increase the number of people at risk of hunger. Infectious disease vectors (transmitted by the bite of infected by mosquitoes. through changes in water, air and food quality and changes in ecosystems, agriculture, industry and settlements and the economy. Migration and conflict (conflicts may be linked to competition over natural resources )

8 What Can We do? International You …
Kyoto Protocol – International binding agreement set for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions . These amount to an average of five per cent against 1990 levels over the five-year period You Grow your own food But local produce Turn off lights and any other electrical products, insulate houses Use energy efficient products Use Eco Products (designed in a sustainable way) Use renewable energy instead of non renewable Buy durable products rather than disposable Only buy products that have been made in a sustainable way. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.

9 Combustion of fossil fuels
How can these pollutants be reduced? fluidised bed technology (limestone is burnt with the coal so the sulphur remains with the limestone) burn coal with less sulphur gas flue desulphurisation (water is sprayed down the chimneys and this turns the gases to sulphuric and nitric acids) construct taller chimneys or..we could use more nuclear or renewable energy or..we could use less energy, more efficiently…

10 Nuclear Nuclear energy is made from the mineral, uranium. These power stations are often located by the coast or on estuaries where there is water for cooling. France has 55 nuclear power stations. This one is in the Rhone Valley.

11 Nuclear 0ne tonne of uranium can produce the same amount of electricity as tonnes of coal. uranium = tonnes of coal What are the other advantages of nuclear power?

12 Nuclear or fossil fuels?
What about nuclear waste? Nuclear energy is the clean fuel of the future Fossil fuels cause pollution Nuclear power is too costly to be used for heating and transport Fossil fuels will run out There is worry about nuclear disasters Terminals and refineries take up space Nuclear energy will cause a loss of mining jobs Only small amounts of uranium are needed in nuclear power stations Oil and gas could be exhausted by 2040 It is very expensive to decommission old nuclear power stations There have been no serious nuclear accidents in Britain
