1 DETOXIFICATION: HOW DETOX WORKS AND WHY YOU MUST DO IT!
Dr. Ann Auburn, DO Natural Health Improvement Center, Grandville, MI AUGUST 2016

2 Objectives: Review common toxins and how they affect the body
Review the body’s mechanisms for detox Review the benefits of detoxification Whole body, simple detox anyone can do Daily dietary measures to enhance detox Daily supplements to enhance detox Clean skin care for less chemicals How to detox: choosing what works for you

3 Mini-questionnaire for DETOXIFICATION:
Do you often feel tired or have a lack of energy? Do you have sore muscles for no apparent reason? Do you have difficulty concentrating? Are you easily irritated or feel moody? Do you have trouble sleeping? Do you feel bloated or gain weight easily? Do you have digestive or intestinal discomfort? Do you feel like you’re not as healthy as other people your age? If you answered “yes” to any of the questions above, then ask your healthcare provider about the potential benefits of a metabolic detoxification program. ALSO SEE THE LONGER DETOXIFICATION QUESTIONNAIRE.

4 Environmental Toxins From the Centers for Disease Control (CDC):
“The epidemic of Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), as well as immunological and neurological diseases is likely associated with environmental toxins”

5 Chronic Disease According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), chronic disease is now the principle cause for patients to come to the doctor. The JAMA article concludes that today’s physician is not fully trained to handle the rise in chronic disease We need a change, a new paradigm, to approach the rising incidence of chronic disease. DETOXIFICATION IS A MAJOR KEY to the reduction and prevention of chronic disease.

6 Biochemical Stressors leading to toxic exposure and disease
Smoking/tobacco Industrial waste, work exposures, plastics Lack of purified water Environmental toxic chemicals including drugs, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides Toxic foods: hormones, chemicals, colorings, flavorings, hydrogenated oils, lead, arsenic, mercury, and more Predisposing factors and exposures make patients vulnerable to disease and each patient will respond differently Stress, negative emotions, toxic relationships Watching violent TV, playing violent video games

7 Water Contains Impurities
The WATER WE DRINK is also contaminated with harmful chemicals—make sure yours is PURIFIED/FILTERED!!

8 The AIR WE BREATH is polluted with toxins:

9 AIR POLLUTANTS Other airborne chemicals: Plastics & Phthalates:
Auto exhaust Industrial incinerators exhaust Airplane exhaust Industrial waste The above can contain: Organic Hydrocarbons including formaldehyde, toluene and benzene Heavy metals Pesticides Xenobiotics Plastics & Phthalates: Construction materials Furnishings Baby bottles Teething toys Kitchen appliances Computer housing Auto dashboards Carpeting Plastic water bottles Fumes from all of the above

10 The Food We Eat: Nutrient Depleted and Chemicalized
The FOOD WE EAT isn’t always fresh and has less nutrients due to soil depletion and the use of pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers and genetically modified seeds

11 Fast Food – it’s a problem! Want some chemicals, GMO’s and other toxins? Order it up!

12 Chemicals in the Food We Eat:
Phthalates outgas from plastics in packaging, tightly bind in our cells and gum up the works, disrupting hormones, damage brain chemistry and accumulate in organs causing cancers of prostate, breast, lung and thyroid. Also found in our everyday air. Dioxins, one of the most potent toxins known. Created in part by the manufacture of plastics, pesticides and other chemicals. From industrial smokestacks to clouds and then rain, these chemicals go back into soil and are taken up by plants, used in food for animals and humans. Styrene in Styrofoam cups. Once inside the body, there is no mechanism for getting rid of this carcinogen. EPA studies of human fat biopsies show styrene residues are in 100% of people tested!

13 Endocrine Disruptors (A partial list of chemical names)
Types Xenoestrogens Alkylphenols Bisphenol A (BPA) Bisphenol S (BPS) Heavy metals Long-chain alkylphenols DDT Polychlorinated biphenyls Polybrominated diphenyl ethers Phthalates Perfluorooctanoic acid

14 Environmental Endocrine Disruptors (EEDs, aka, Xenohormones or Xenobiotics)
“Xeno” means foreigner, therefore, EED’s are chemicals foreign to or not produced by an organism, some of them disrupt hormones, others cause various problems. The chemistry of EEDs resembles that of hormones, therefore, mimicking hormones or affecting their normal functions and receptors. EEDs act like a monkey wrench in the normal chemistry. EEDs can cause learning disabilities, ADD, cancer, infertility, fatigue, depression, mood swings, memory loss, endometriosis and loss of libido. All issues which are at an all-time high and continually rising.

15 Toxic products in our homes
Urea foam formaldehyde insulation (UFFI) from the 1970’s causes brain fog, headaches, depression, asthma, arthritis and/or nausea. Carpet outgases over a dozen chemicals, capable of creating disease. Common carpet chemicals: benzene, toluene, Xylene, formaldehyde, butadiene, styrene, methacrylates and more. Construction materials: paints, wallboard, plastics in computers/appliances, plasticizers in wall paper, phenols in plywood, formaldehyde in pressed wood, sofas and mattresses. And, avoid air fresheners!

16 Toxins in Water The average city water contains over 500 different chemicals! Water is poisoned mostly by industrial pollution from smokestacks and waste water, plus artificial fertilizer (aka, sewage sludge with heavy metals) and pesticide runoff from agriculture. Fluoride is a toxin deliberately added to water. This is a HALOGEN, which is a potent enzyme inhibitor that is even used as a preservative and anticoagulant for biological specimens. It causes excess calcification in arteries, joints and ligaments and contributes to many forms of cancer and osteoporosis. Also linked to behavioral disorders, birth defects, flu-like symptoms and arthritis. It also acts like a heavy metal, damaging enzymes. THERE’S MORE…

17 Water Toxins, continued
Chlorine, used for decades to kill bugs in drinking water and as a home cleanser, turns out to be a free radical initiator elevating cholesterol and accelerates aging. Chlorine causes lipid peroxidation, weakening arterial walls, plugged up by cholesterol, creating atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Chlorine also promotes cancers of the rectum and bladder.

18 We are often exposed to chemicals in our work place or neighborhood
Chemical Wastes: Chemicals in industry:

19 Toxins in the Newborn: The cord blood of newborns contains over 250 chemicals that are foreign to the human body, 26% of those babies will already have mercury at birth Heavy metals, chemicals, medicines and other toxins cross the placenta from the mother to the newborn Similar chemicals are found in breast milk

20 Chronic Heavy Metal Retention
“Low-level exposures are associated with long-term effects not previously recognized” (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, NIEHS) Knowledge of adverse effects are based primarily on independent studies of a single toxicant (CDC) Metals can elicit independent, additive or synergistic toxic effects (CDC) Metal retention limits (MRLs) for exposures have not considered that humans bioaccumulate metals (CDC) Environ Hlth Perspect(1995)103:1048 ATSDR/CDC Lead update (2007) Med Clin N Am(2005)89:721 J Toxicol Env Hlth(1978)4:763

21 TOXIC EFFECTS of Bioaccumulation
“Individuals vary considerably in their sensitivity to metals and susceptibility to toxic effects varies with age, gender, pregnancy status, nutritional status, total toxic load and genetics.” (CDC) Toxicants, such as metals and chemicals, elicit independent additive or synergistic toxic effects (CDC) Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs – a type of genetic abnormality) - (aberrant methionine metabolism, MTHFR, CBS, MTR, etc.) are part of the genetics that influence the effects of toxins on individuals. ATSDR/CDC Tox Profile for Lead (2007 update) Mutation Res(2003)544:235 Am J Clin Nutr (2009)89:425-30

22 TOXINS CAUSE OR WORSEN: Fatigue, Metabolism, Energy production and utilization, Pain, Weakness, Body aches, Headaches, Heartburn, Gas and Bloating, Memory problems, Blocked arteries, Hypertension, Immune function, Cancer, Chronic medical conditions & more.

23 What is the Secret to Health?
The secret is to empower yourself with the tools to unload the chemicals in your body and prime the body with the nutrition it needs to continually detoxify and heal itself. Taking medicines, in most cases, just shuts off the broken pathways, allowing you to continue ignoring the causes of poor health. Toxins of many types are the underlying cause of nearly all disease.

24 As put by one author…

25 Quality Water intake helps detox
Dilution is the solution to pollution! Quality water is filtered. If you use Reverse Osmosis, add alkalinizing drops to your water, since RO water is quite acidic at a pH of 6.6. Another option is to get an Alkalinizer machine. This can produce water up to pH 9.6 and also filters the water, taking out most toxins.

26 Benefits of Detoxification:
Normalize the body’s innate ability to detoxify. Preserve body tissues to maintain quality of life as we age. Preserve body functions like metabolism, fat burning, sleep patterns and recovery from physical and emotional stressors, to maintain normal weight, muscle mass, blood sugar and neuromuscular functions as we age…HOMEOSTASIS. Prevent and/or improve disease states, including, but not limited to, CARDIOVASCULAR, ENDOCRINE, NEUROLOGICAL AND IMMUNE diseases. Limit the extent of daily toxin exposure and damage from contaminated air, food and water. Improve immune system function and decrease risk for cancer and degenerative diseases.

27 Just a Few Substances Secreted by Fat Cells – motivation to maintain a healthy weight
Resistin Angiotensin IL-1, IL-6 PGE-2 ICAM Fat Cell TNF-alpha CRP Colony Stimulating Factor Estrone Macrophage Inflammatory Protein

28 That is WHY we should detoxify
We are all exposed to toxins in our daily life. Since it is not possible to ALWAYS eat organic, clean, pure, unprocessed food, breathe clean air, and control our exposures, we must eat as clean of a diet as possible and practice detoxification on a regular basis. In addition, we can and should use specific detox treatments as prescribed by a trained medical professional.

29 The Importance of DETOX:
A body overloaded by toxins does not properly detoxify itself Overall health, energy levels, skin, digestion and fat burning all benefit A simple dietary detox is recommended at least twice a year An internal, whole body, gentle cleanse can be incorporated into even the busiest lifestyle

30 Mini Detox Program – 10, 21 or 28 days
Ultra Clear Plus (or Renew) 1-2 scoops twice daily Contains liver support and detoxifiers to bind chemicals and some heavy metal toxins Diet pamphlet for program given to patient to eliminate common allergenic/processed foods Patient works up to the 2 scoops 1-2 x daily, starting with ½ scoop per day Program takes 1-2 cannisters Probiotics (Ultraflora Balance/Orthobiotic) 1-2/d Stay on Purified Fish Oils 2/day

31 HOW IS DETOX DONE? Let’s review the basic chemistry of Detoxification

32 Remove the source(s) of exposure!
Basic Toxicology RULE #1: Remove the source(s) of exposure!

33 REMOVE THE SOURCE(s) OF TOXINS
Remove amalgam dental fillings (properly!) Filter your water (NEVER drink tap water!) Avoid alcohol and drink organic wines if you do Avoid foods with toxins Avoid medications Maintain a healthy, normal weight & build muscle Avoid paints and construction materials with toxins Take chemicals out of your health and beauty aids Take chemicals out of your yard and lawn care Take chemicals out of your home cleaning products Eat 80% organic and 60-70% raw, whole foods

34 MAINTAIN A HEALTHY GUT!

35

36 Leaky Gut Syndrome When the intestines are not providing adequate “barrier” function, an increased burden is put on the liver. Leaky gut syndrome forces the liver to process higher quantities of internally and externally derived toxins. This stress can lead to a heightened systemic inflammatory state.

37 Common conditions associated with Leaky Gut Syndrome
Acne Aging Aids Alcoholism Allergies/Food Sensitivities Ankylosing Spondylitis Arthritis Asthma Autism Candida Infections/overgrowth Celiac Disease Chemical Sensitivities Chemotherapy Chronic Fatigue Crohn’s Disease (colitis) Ulcerative Colitis Cystic Fibrosis Eczema Irritable Bowel Syndrome

38 Common conditions associated with Leaky Gut Syndrome (cont’d)
Environmental Illness Fibromyalgia Hyperactivity Intestinal Infections Liver Dysfunction Lupus Malabsorption Malnutrition Nutritional Deficiencies/Poor Diet Psoriasis Reiter’s Syndrome Rheumatoid Arthritis Osteoarthritis Schizophrenia Trauma

39 Fungal Methylation of Mercury (Hg)
Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae incubated with HgCl2 C. albicans more resistant to Hg Both species transformed Hg (Mercury) into MeHg (Methyl Mercury – more toxic!) in proportion to Hg added, C. albicans highest rate Mercury is a survival mechanism for yeast, but an increased toxicity to the host… The moral of the story is MERCURY makes you more likely to have CANDIDA OVERGROWTH and associated symptoms! Appl. Environ. Microbiol.(1991)57:245-7

41 The 4R program GI Restoration Fundamentals
1. Remove offending substances from the diet 2. Replace digestive enzymes and digestive acid when necessary 3. Re-inoculate with probiotics 4. Restore digestive mucosa integrity with proper nutrients A possible 5th “R” for Relieve abdominal bloating, cramps with proper relaxants and anti-gas agents.

42 Why stabilize the GI tract before Heavy Metal Detox
Why stabilize the GI tract before Heavy Metal Detox? Dysbiosis and Sulfur Compounds N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) and DMSA can exacerbate GI symptoms, and apparently the growth of undesirable bacteria/yeast. Assess GI health/integrity: Clean up GI tract BEFORE starting metal detoxification with oral sulfur based compounds

43 The GI Microbiome and Toxicology
Toxicologists acknowledge that toxicokinetic models need to be revised to include the influence of the GI microbiome “pool.”* Strong evidence that toxicant disruption of the GI microbiome crosses generations (e.g. “bad microbiome from grandma”) Microbiota that normally live in the GI tract perform many useful functions (digestion, train immune system, neurotransmitter production, heal gut lining, protection from pathogens and chemicals, etc.)…

44 The GI Microbiome and Toxicology
GI Microbiota functions (continued): Promote the expression of liver CYPs (Cytochrome P enzymes for detox) (Phase I) Detoxification of arsenic, lead, mercury and chemical entities removing a source of damage & leaky gut Convert a phytoestrogen precursor (hops) to an anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective compound The metabolic activity of the GI microbiome rivals that of the liver! 45 Liver Detoxification of Organic Compounds
Phase I: oxidative activation (loss of electrons, preparing for conjugation) Phase II: conjugation (In chemistry, a conjugate refers to a compound formed by the joining of two or more chemical compounds) Phase III: unidirectional excretion via ATP dependent efflux pumps Optimal detoxification requires coordinated regulation of genes encoding for enzymes in all 3 phases! Drug Metab Dispos(2001)29: J Neurosci(2008)28:265-72

46 Overview of Detoxification:
Exposure through air, food, water and stress, can add up to over 14 pounds of pesticides, herbicides, food additives and preservatives per year for an average American. The liver, together with the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, is the organ responsible for removing these toxins through the process of BIOTRANSFORMATION. If the liver is not working well, every other system in the body is at risk due to fat soluble toxins, which are poorly excreted, and become stored in the body. The process of biotransformation is performed through a two-step enzymatic process known as Phase I and Phase II detoxification.

47 Phase I Liver Detox: Fat Soluble toxins
Phase I is composed of a series of enzymes, called the cytochrome P450 system, which chemically changes harmful, fat soluble toxins into intermediate metabolites. Enzymes help these processes: Oxidation, Reduction, Hydrolysis, Hydration, Dehalogenation Nutrients needed: Vitamins B2, B3, B6, B12, Folic Acid, Glutathione, Flavonoids

48 Phase II Liver Detoxification:
The “intermediary metabolites” are often more toxic than the original fat soluble toxins, and must go through Phase II conjugation into safe, inert, water soluble compounds which are then excreted from the body via urine, bile and stool. Conjugation Pathways: Sulfation, Glucoronidation, Glutathione Conjugation, Acetylation, Amino Acid Conjugation, Methylation. These enzyme pathways remove toxins and scavenge free radicals. Nutrients needed: Vitamins B5, B12, C, Folic Acid, Methionine, Cysteine, Glutathione, Glutamine, Glycine, Choline, Magnesium and Taurine.

49 Toxicants Inhibit Phase I Detox: Toxicology in Vitro (2007) 21:408-16, Molec Carcinogenesis (2000) 28:225-35, Toxicol Letters (2004) 148:153-8, Interdisip Toxicol (2013)6:159-84, Eur J Parmacol (2005) 510: XENOBIOTIC a chemical compound (drug, pesticide, carcinogen) foreign to an organism  Cytochrome P450 isozymes Mercury, Lead, Cadmium, Arsenic, Glyphosate, Cobalt, Hexavalent Chromium, O-antigen from K. pneumoniae and P. aeruginosa INHIBIT THE ACTIVATION OF XENOBIOTICS ACTIVATED XENOBIOTIC

51 Quenching Reactive Oxygen Species
Molecules and ions of oxygen that have an unpaired electron, thus rendering them extremely reactive A build up of reactive oxygen species in cells may cause damage to DNA, RNA, and proteins, and may cause cell death The following help to reduce ROS’s: Superoxide Dismutases, which depend on Copper, Zinc and Manganese GSH peroxidases, which depend on selenium Glutathione reductase, needs magnesium and needs up to 10% of total body glucose – VERY ENERGY DEPENDENT! and blocked by lead, mercury, copper and cadmium

52 Phase III: Pump it Out! Membrane-bound efflux pumps- ↓ local cellular toxins (Phase II conjugates and metabolites) ENERGY DEPENDENT !! (B vitamins, Mg, Mn, Fe, CoQ10) OATPs- Organic Anion-Transport Proteins in kidney → to urine, and liver → to bile → and intestines Pharmacogenomics(2008)9: Clin Exp Pham Physiol(2010)37: Biofactors(2003)17:103-14

53 Inflammation Compromises Detoxification
Inflammation of the intestines or liver compromises detoxification (toxicants, end stage metabolites) Intestinal inflammation down-regulates hepatic efflux pumps activity (Phase III)- suppressed excretion of toxins inhibits Phase II, increases oxidative stress Keep bowels moving to prevent reduced detoxification processes, and minimize enterohepatic recirculation. Optimize beneficial flora- pre/probiotics (SCFA production), Saccharomyces boulardii – found in Orthobiotic and Ultraflora Spectrum (↑sIgA- the only immunoglobulin that directly reduces inflammation). Lipophilic Curcumin (Meriva-SF) is also very anti-inflammatory. Toxicol Sci(2009)107:27-39 Am J Physiol(2007)292:G JBC(2006)281: Gut(2003)52:

54 Important messages! Get rid of heavy metal toxins
Take your multivitamins and prescribed supplements to get all of the vitamins and minerals needed for detox to work effectively Detox regularly to maintain and enhance long term benefits.

55 Methylation Cycle of Detoxification
Much too complicated chemistry to review here Dependent on several different steps: If blood homocysteine high (greater than 10), Folate, best form is L-methyl folate, supplementation is needed to reduce homocysteine levels, which are associated with: Aberrant neurotransmitter metabolism, developmental delay, psychiatric affects, oxidative stress, ↓ DNA synthesis & repair, immune dysregulation, cancer, poor response to environmental toxins, and ↑risk for CVD Sulfur donors (SAM-e, MSM) and Magnesium also needed for healthy methylation detoxification

56 More on Glutathione (aka, GSH)
Also known as, γ-glutamylcysteinylglycine SH Intracellular functions: Modulates DNA synthesis & immune function Regulates nitric oxide homeostasis Antioxidant defense / Redox control Facilitates cellular Mg and glucose uptake Conjugation of metals and chemicals Mol Aspects Med(2009)30:42-59 Hypertension(1999)34:76-82 Hypertension(1999)34:1002-6

58 GSH, Oxidative Stress and CVD
The higher the serum GSH levels, the less arterial intimal media thickness (atherosclerosis) (humans). Oxidative stress → Ox-LDL→ unregulated uptake of Ox-LDL by macrophages→ oxidative damage to macrophages (Macs) Macsox in turn can oxidize normal and small dense LDL Oral liposomal GSH decreased Ox-LDL uptake, Macsox, Mac cholesteryl ester content, and aortic lesion (blockage/thickening) area by 30% (vs. control)* Am Coll Cardiol(2006)47: Athersclerosis(2002)161:307-16 *Atherosclerosis(2007)195 :e61-e68

59 LIPID PEROXIDATION: Free Radicals are explosive, chemically reactive species (meaning electrons) that, if not controlled, cause damage to cell membranes by LIPID PEROXIDATION Cell membranes are made up of a phospholipid layer and are a protective barrier to keep the inside contents of the cell from mixing with the particles from the environment outside the cell. Just like your skin protects your internal organs. Damage to the cell membrane occurs with Lipid Peroxidation, from Free Radical damage. It’s like an open wound in the skin, which is now leaving your internal organs unprotected from damage.

60 NORMAL CELL/DAMAGED CELL

61 Increasing Glutathione Levels
NOT oral encapsulated Glutathione (intestinal) Oral liposomal Glutathione does work! And quite well - ↑ RBC*, brain and heart Glutathione, ↑ Cobalt excretion, ↓ reperfusion injury (isolated rabbit hearts) and neuroprotective (in vitro, and some Parkinson’s) Nebulized Glutathione Intravenous Glutathione – short half life ~ 14 min., but it does ↑ RBC GSH & Mg Can also increase with Alpha Lipoic Acid and NAC Eur J Pharm(1992)43:667-9 Athero(2007)195 :61-68 *Quig unpublished(2013) Neurochem Res(2010)DOI /s11064 Hlth Phys(2010)98:53 J Cardiovasc Pharmacol(2013)61: Chest(1996)110:267S-72S Hypertension(1999)

63 Metallothionein Detox
Another pathway for natural detox of heavy metals One of the most important detox systems in all species When Metallothionein isn’t binding heavy metals, its role is to transport Zinc and Copper Known to efficiently bind several toxic metals, particularly Cadmium and Mercury and act as a transporter of toxic metals to the liver or kidneys for conjugation and excretion.

64 How to enhance Metallothionein
Zinc loading has been used for many years to upregulate the production of Metallothionein Metagenics has produced a superior product with a combination of zinc citrate, Andrographis extract, curcuminoids and a special extract of hops with proven results in enhancing heavy metal detoxification – METALLOCLEAR. Metalloclear study showed that 3 tabs twice/day reduced heavy metal burden on Urine Toxic Metals testing.

65 Notes on Heavy Metal Testing

66 Red Blood Cell Elements: Exposure
Exposure is indicated in certain tests like RBC Elements and Hair Analysis Exposure means we know it’s been there, but we have no idea how much and it doesn’t show all of the toxin that is assimilated and retained Retention is another matter…

67 EXPOSURE ≠ TOXICITY! Exposure Assimilation Retension TOXICITY!

68 Example of exposure: recent

69 This mercury was from commercially available facial cream:
“Facial Renovate” lightening cream Hg content: 13,300 µg / gm commercial fish < 0.5 ppm You will see high levels like this in RBC Elements testing and Hair Analyses The same thing will happen when a person eats tuna or other mercury containing fish on a regular, almost daily basis. This still doesn’t give the amount of retained heavy metal toxins. Research done by Quig D and Wilson J (2009) unpublished

70 Hair Analysis: Assessment of Exposure
Excretory tissue, like hair, binds circulating metals Hair concentrates metals cumulatively Hair mercury is times > than blood Hg Useful for recent/ongoing EXPOSURE DOES NOT diagnose metal toxicity (net retention) NO direct indication of net retention! (that is, toxicity)! A URINE TOXIC METALS TEST (UTM) is needed atsdr.cdc.gov/HAC [Accessed 3/14/12] Mayomdicallaboratories.com [Accessed 3/13/12] Handbook on Metals in Clinical & Analytical Chemistry eds. Seilier et al. (1994).

71 Exposure: what does hair tell us?
W.H.O. endorsed screening test for women of child bearing age, exposure to MeHg (methylmercury in fish) Maternal MeHg highly correlated with adverse developmental effects on fetus/children. “The concentration of Hg in hair correlates with the severity of clinical symptoms.” * Several nationally recognized labs have been offering hair analysis for Hg, Pb and As for years. * [Accessed 3/14/12] [Accessed 3/10/14] Pharmacol (2007) 49: Env Hlth Perspect(2006)114:302-6

72 Lead and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
Arch. Envir.Hlth. (1996)

73 Arsenic Exposure in Hair Analysis Roxarsone: an organoarsenic compound widely used in poultry production as a feed additive to increase weight gain and improve feed efficiency

74 How Does One Get Tested for Metal Burden?
Exposure Net Retention  Toxicity Exposure: Hair Elemental Analysis Net Retention/Body Burden: “Provoked” Urinary Metals Test using a chelator (heavy metal toxin binder)

78 Urinary Metals Testing
Doctor will decide which chelator to use Assess kidney/liver function Assess complete blood count Nutritional Work-up: -Hair Analysis or Blood analysis for minerals -sometimes Food Allergy test -sometimes Amino acid status -sometimes Assess GI health/function Optimize nutritional status before chelating diet, supplements, mini-detox

79 Heavy Metal Toxins Toxic metals are almost everywhere, causing inflammation, immune system dysfunction and neurotoxicity (nervous system tissue damage) and contributing to arterial blockage and organ dysfunction Lead - in gasoline, paint, batteries and some cosmetics Mercury - in amalgam (silver) fillings, fish, paint, vaccines (the flu shot) Arsenic - in residues from crop sprays, ground water and chicken feed Cadmium - in tobacco, tires and plating on metals Aluminum - in cookware, aluminum foil, antiperspirants & antacids Nickel is in cigarettes, plating on metals and some soy and cocoa

80 What Do Toxic Metals Do? Neurotoxic = Damages nervous system (lead, mercury, arsenic) Nephrotoxic = Damages kidneys (lead, cadmium, mercury) Cardiovascular Disease = decreased circulation Cause Dysregulation of Immune System Compromise Gastrointestinal Integrity Compromise Nutritional Status Carcinogenic = Cause cancer (lead, cadmium, arsenic)

81 Heavy metal toxins over-the-counter
Arsenic, Lead and Mercury are in 20% of the Ayurvedic herbs sold over the internet Levels in these herbs were far in excess of what is acceptable and safe by the state of California ~750,000 Americans have used Ayurvedic herbs Doctor’s Data labs have analyzed many of these and in Dr. Quig’s words,... “It blows my mind how many of these have high levels of HMT’s.”

82 Heavy metal toxins (HMTs) over-the-counter
In the analysis of one over-the-counter Ayurvedic herbal preparation there was 50 mg lead per gram of herb. The patient taking the herb had a lead level of 9,800 mcg/gram creatinine in a urine toxic metals test – normal is LESS THAN 5!

83 Arsenic, a little more info…
“Arsenic is the #1 Heavy Metal Toxin and it’s overuse is one of the greatest travesties of mankind.” ~Dr. David Quig, Doctor’s Data Lab Arsenic is x higher in urban than remote areas Arsenic is found in: Meat, fish, poultry Herbicides, insecticides, fungicides Mushrooms Tobacco, herbs, teas Wine, vinyards, orchards, cotton manufacturing Fossil fuels, particularly coal-fired plants Mining of copper and metal alloys Zinc liquid fertilizers Wood preservatives

84 What can you do NOW? Take “basics”: Multivit/mineral, Calmag & omega-3’s and probiotics are a good idea too! Eat organic food & minimize processed food Work with a holistic practitioner to refine your program, detoxify regularly, clean up the gut and chelate out heavy metals as recommended Do a mini-detox with your health practitioner Do not heat food in a microwave in plastic Use glass, polycarbonate or stainless steel water containers Exercise regularly, this supports natural detox Proper sleep Drink purified water Regular elimination
