1 Year Six Rowan Welcome Meeting Taking Pride and Aiming High

2 Aims of this meeting To enable parents to meet the Year 6 staff.
To explain the main activities planned for the year. To give suggestions for how you could support your child in their learning. To understand the transition between primary and secondary school.

4 What is Year 6 all about? The purpose of Year 6 is to prepare children for secondary school by building on, consolidating, using and applying their skills and knowledge from lower down in the school.

5 Attendance The key to academic success is EXCELLENT ATTENDANCE.
In order for your child to be successful at school we expect them to be here EVERY DAY unless they are ill. As a school we have HIGH EXPECTATIONS of your child. To maximise learning, attendance should be more than 96%. HOLIDAYS are not to be taken during term time. A RECORD of any holidays taken will be kept in your child’s file. Any doctor, hospital APPOINTMENTS should be made for after school. Taking Pride and Aiming High

6 Punctuality Punctuality is VITAL. Pupils are expected to arrive in school between 8:45am-9:00am . Pupils are marked as late if they arrive after 9:00am when the register closes. Taking Pride and Aiming High

8 End of Year Expectations
READING I am familiar with and can talk about a wide range of books and text types, including myths, legends and traditional stories and books from other cultures and traditions. I can discuss the features of each. I can read books that are structured in different ways. I can recognise texts that contain features from more than one text type. I can evaluate how effectively texts are structured and presented. I can read non-fiction texts to help with my learning. I read accurately and check that I understand. I can recommend books to others and give reasons for my recommendation. I can identify themes in texts.

9 End of Year Expectations
WRITING I can identify the audience for and purpose of the writing. I can choose the appropriate form and register for the audience and purpose of the writing. I use grammatical structures and features and choose vocabulary appropriate to the audience, purpose and degree of formality to make meaning clear and create effect. I use a range of sentence starters to create specific effects. I can use developed noun phrases to add detail to sentences. I use the passive voice to present information with a different emphasis. I use commas to mark phrases and clauses. I can sustain and develop ideas logically in narrative and non-narrative writing. I can use character, dialogue and action to advance events in narrative writing. I can summarise a text, conveying key information in writing.

MATHS Number, place value, approximation and estimation/rounding • I can read, write, order and compare numbers up to10,000,000. • I can determine the value of each digit in numbers up to 10,000,000. • I can round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy. • I can use negative numbers in context, and calculate intervals across zero. • I can solve number problems and practical problems with the above.

11 End of Year Expectations
Children are also expected to solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ratio Fractions, decimals and percentages Use algebra and simple formula Read, write and convert between standard units, converting measurements of length, mass, volume and time from a smaller unit of measure to a larger unit, and vice versa, using decimal notation of up to 3 decimal places. Draw and interpret a variety of graphs and charts including pie charts.

13 How parents can support…
Talk about what they are learning. Question them ‘How do you know…’ Support homework, BUT don’t do it for them. Practise of times tables; Multiplication and division facts. Daily reading at home; Ask questions about the text and characters. Spellings practise (see year 5 and 6 curriculum list).

14 Communication We will communicate with you using the following methods; Weekly bulletin Monthly newsletter Website Twitter And as always, we are available by letter, in person or pupil diary.

15 PE Kits PE is games on Monday and dance/gym on Wednesday.
Please bring in PE kits every Monday and take home by Friday each week.

16 Pencil Cases Please ensure your child has the basic equipment to get them through the school day. Pencils, colours, sharpener, eraser, ruler and glue sticks are available in school but are in short supply, please provide where possible.

17 Home Learning Homework will consist of a maths activity, an English activity and spellings each week. Every child is expected to read at least four times a week and get it signed by an adult Homework will go out on a Monday and is expected back on a Friday. Spellings will be tested on a Friday.

18 Trips We will be arranging one trip a term including the residential.
We will (where possible) keeps costs to a minimum due to the expense involved in the residential trip. The residential has been rearranged and will now be at Wild Child Adventures.

19 Productions Year 6 will be performing in a shared production with year 5 in the summer term.
