1 Skills, not jobs cracking the genome of the JOB MARKET
MATT SIGELMAN, CEO BURNING GLASS TECHNOLOGIES June 28, 2017 @mattsigelman NEBHE Commission on Higher Education and Employability

2 Jobs have a genome AND EDUCATION NEEDS A MAP
Jobs are bundles of skills Education is also built around skills That means skills are the common denominator between education and work

3 JOBS ARE HAVING SEX THE EMERGENCE OF A HYBRID GENOME Welder
Mobile App Developer WELDING Mig and Tig Welding Repair Inspection Gas-metal Arc Welding Flux Core Welding Calipers Shielded Metal Arc Welding Schematic Diagrams SOFT SKILLS Detail oriented Work area maintenance Quality assurance PROGRAMMING JAVA Objective C Swift SDK DESIGN UI/UX Mobile app design Product development Animation Cocoa MARKETING eCommerce Social media Google Analytics SOFT SKILLS Collaboration Writing Creativity

4 SKILLS ARE CROPPING UP IN THE DARNDEST PLACES

5 Demand for Data skills ISN’T ABOUT DATA SCIENCE JOBS 67% of jobs calling for data science & analytics (DSA) skills are “analytics- enabled”. These jobs apply data to business cases. In other words, they make decisions based on data. Only one-third of jobs calling for DSA skills are in data science.

6 DATA’S Biggest Impact Will Be in Existing Roles
2.7 million DSA jobs projected in 2020 While quant roles are growing fast, much of this hiring will be in existing jobs The biggest single area of hiring: Business Analyst, with an estimated 349,662 openings in 2020

7 A SEA CHANGE IN MIDDLE SKILLS TOO
DIGITAL SKILLS: A MINIMUM TICKET TO RIDE 2X Digitally intensive jobs are growing twice as fast as other middle-skill jobs Digitally intensive jobs are twice as likely to pay a living wage Of middle-skill jobs require digital skills

8 Hybrid jobs ARE growing fast
Nearly twice as fast as jobs overall

9 HYBRID JOBS ARE MORE HUMAN
MORE SOFT SKILLS, MORE RESISTANT TO AUTOMATION % of Data Science jobs requesting key soft skills vs. % of all jobs

10 HARD TIME FINDING SOFT SKILLS
DON’T GIVE UP THE FIGHT! For employers, the skills gap is at least as much about soft skills as it is about technical capabilities

11 FAULTY SIGNALS A FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM
Employers signal what they need, workers signal what they offer All markets depend on signals Unfortunately, our current job market is really bad at sending and processing signals

12 WHY YOUR KID LIVES IN THE ATTIC
AND WHY SUB-BA’S CAN’T SEEM TO GET AHEAD A Wharton study using Burning Glass data found that BA+ jobs also ask for more experience On average, jobs requiring a bachelor’s asked for years’ experience This is bad news for recent college grads, who have high education but not experience It also explains the double penalty paid by those without a degree: Even as they accrue experience, it’s not valued Source: Matthew Bidwell, Wharton School

13 WRONG SIDE OF THE DIGITAL TRACKS
JOBS AND COMMUNITIES AT RISK Risk of automation New England MSAs with highest percentage of non-digital middle-skill job postings

14 ESCAPING THE DEAD END THERE ARE SUCCESFUL PATHWAYS UP fROM RETAIL
People who transition out of retail are 223% more likely to be in a job with low automation risk Workers who transition out of retail are 40% more likely to be in a better paying job than those who remain 1. Higher paying is defined as earning at least 30% more than the initial salary. Progression rates are estimated based on the average salaries of occupations and hence there is no variation across individuals who work in the same occupation. sdsd

15 50 WAYS TO LEAVE RETAIL Pathways TO LOWER AUTOMATION VULNERABILITY

18 MIDDLE SKILL WORKERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO MANAGE THAN AN MBA

19 SUPERVISORY SKILLS ARE THE STEP INTO THE MIDDLE CLASS
In the food service industry, supervisory skills can mean $10,000 or more per year compared to wait staff positions. Workers with these skills also routinely cross over between the “front” and “back of the house” Using job posting data and real-life career transitions from our resume database, Burning Glass was able to map out viable career pathways for a wide range of positions in the restaurant business.

24 Clear pathways let both workers and employers fit skills into context
CLEAR SIGNALS ENABLE BETTER DECISIONS In addition to training, education provides a vital signal-processing role Workers and students respond to signals—so reconsider what signals we send Clear pathways let both workers and employers fit skills into context

30 IDENTIFY DISRUPTIVE SKILLS
CHANGE THAT UPENDS INDUSTRIES Disruptive skills are those that are both fast-growing and hard to find. Usually these are new skills that are suddenly in demand, and there isn’t an established supply pipeline. If you identify these skills early, you can adjust programs to better serve students and employers.

31 NOT ALL SKILLS ARE EQUAL
BUILD PROGRAMS TO ADDRESS HOTSPOTS… 31

32 …IN BOTH MIDDLE AND HIGH SKILLS

37 THE OPPORTUNITY HIGHER ED AND THE JOB MARKET
Existing bundles aren’t always formulated for career outcomes Higher education knows how to build skills When skill bundles are compiled for specific career transitions, higher ed will open huge opportunities
