Challenges include: Strengthening of Mandatory Year of Dental Foundation (DF) Training; Developing post-DF Dental Core Training; Changes to CPD delivery based on new guidance from GDC and recommendations of the CPD review Analysing the needs for Dental Specialties, including increased training in the primary care sector; Addressing the Skill-mix Agenda for the delivery of oral health care in primary care dentistry. Support for Enhanced practitioner training for DCPs and Dentists Improving the interface UG/PG education for Dentist and DCPs

9 What are the key issues holding us back/helping us from meeting the challenges
Barriers Helpers Poor management information Variable delivery of some core activities Variable evaluation of core activities Questionable educational value for some activity Poor integration with other parts of the organisation Cost effectiveness and VfM need to be evaluated Enthusiastic and experienced staff COPDEND standards High quality DFT and Speciality training programmes Government and Regulator guidance

10 Major new factors relating to development and delivery of CPD
GDC regulatory changes CPD review implementation Health Education Wales

11 CPD new requirements in 20xx
CPD new requirements in 20xx Plan Do Reflect Record Plan - Registrants will identify CPD needs using a personal development plan. This will enable them to evaluate their learning and development needs, in accordance with the GDC’s standards and their scope of practice. This could be done individually or in conjunction with peers or colleagues, the employer/commissioner (such as through an appraisal etc), or the wider dental team. It may also be informed by other information derived from patient feedback, complaints, audit, significant event analysis and peer review processes, or dental practice evaluations, for example.  Do - By identifying CPD that best meets their needs, registrants would then embark upon the planned activity in a timely way.  Reflect - Following the CPD activity the registrant can reflect on its impact by considering how it has or will enable them to maintain and develop their skills. It would enable them to evaluate how their CPD contributes to supporting them to practise in accordance with our standards and how it has contributed positively to the wider context of patient care.  Record - The registrant would then record what they did, including any independently verifiable evidence. They can document the impact and benefits that a CPD event provided, based upon their reflections, and describe how the CPD activity enabled them to achieve outcomes that relate to our standards. They can then go on to identify further learning needs which could be added to their personal development plan, and so continuing the process.

12 Relevant Recommendations of local CPD review
Critical To prioritise the enlargement of project-based or quality improvement centred CPD and to increase collaboration between the leads for these programmes as best practice, evidenced based approaches to CPD. To review the content and recorded learning outcomes of existing activities and events, and to undertake a rationalisation of didactic delivery in particular, which does not fulfil the best-practice principles of CPD. To undertake to provide/facilitate training for in-house CPD trainers and developers. To consider the collaborative delivery of selected CPD activities to multidisciplinary primary care teams.

13 Process of implementing the review needs to move
To output based – Evidence of outcomes and impacts Effect on knowledge, behaviour and attitude Impact on practice/ career/ patients From input based – ‘tick-box’ mentality No evidence of learning or patient benefit No ability to measure value

14 Health Education Wales
Commences April 2018 Involves commissioning and planning All medical and dental education All other healthcare professions education BOTH UG and PG

15 Critical priorities the dental section needs to work on
Review the content and recorded learning outcomes of existing activities and undertake a rationalisation of those that do not fulfil the best-practice principles of CPD. Enlargement of project-based or quality improvement centred CPD Undertake to provide/facilitate training for in-house CPD trainers and developers facilitating individual identification of needs and reflection on development activity

16 What can we do that is different?
Multi disciplinary events Online commitments Study clubs Action learning sets Blended learning Integrated audits

17 Evolution not Revolution
Development of an action plan what are we going to deliver When and how we implement change Course booking system Development of learning programme Development of in house training for CPD tutors and developers
