Creator of Heaven and Earth And in Jesus Christ His Only Son, Our Lord Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary Suffered Under Pontius Pilate

3 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Creator of Heaven and Earth There is a constant clash of worldviews. The Biblical worldview is based on God as Creator. By God’s Word all was created – Genesis 1:1; Hebrews 11:3; Psalms 33:6, 9; 148:5; Peter 3:5.

4 Genesis 1:1 (NASB) Hebrews 11:3 (NASB)
1  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Hebrews 11:3 (NASB) 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.

5 Psalm 33:6, 9 (NASB) 6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
And by the breath of His mouth all their host. 9  For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

6 Psalm 148:5 (NASB) 5  Let them praise the name of the Lord, For He commanded and they were created.

7 2 Peter 3:5 (NASB) 5  For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water,

Creator of Heaven and Earth There is a constant clash of worldviews. The Biblical worldview is based on God as Creator. By God’s Word all was created – Genesis 1:1; Hebrews 11:3; Psalms 33:6, 9; 148:5; Peter 3:5. Creation always comes first followed by redemption – Revelation 4:11; 5:9.

9 Revelation 4:11 (NASB) Revelation 5:9 (NASB)
11  “Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created.” Revelation 5:9 (NASB) 9  And they *sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.”

10 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
If we lose the doctrine of creation, we will eventually lose the doctrine of redemption!

11 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Creator of Heaven and Earth You will never properly understand the universe until you understand the God who created it – Proverbs 9:10.

12 Proverbs 9:10 (NASB) 10  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

13 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Creator of Heaven and Earth You will never properly understand the universe until you understand the God who created it – Proverbs 9:10. Where did I come from? Why am I here? Where am I going? Ultimately, who am I? You can’t answer the others until you answer the first question!

14 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Creator of Heaven and Earth This is why being created in the image of God is so important! Imageo Deo Ultimately, it is about the sovereignty of God! GOD AS CREATOR PARTS WAYS WITH EASTERN RELIGIONS.

15 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
And In Jesus Christ His Only Son, Our Lord Questions about Jesus that need an answer! Who is Jesus Christ? Where did Jesus come from? Why did Jesus come? THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS MAKE CHRISTIANITY PART WITH ISLAM AND JUDIASM!

16 Philippians 2:9-11 (NASB) 9  For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10  so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11  and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

17 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
And In Jesus Christ His Only Son, Our Lord What does this statement say about Jesus? Jesus is our Savior. Jesus is the Messiah (Christ). Jesus is God’s only Son (Jesus is God). Jesus is our Lord (absolute ruler, sovereign).

18 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
And In Jesus Christ His Only Son, Our Lord Jesus in the Scriptures The Old Testament speaks of the Anticipation of Jesus. The Gospels speak of the Incarnation of Jesus. Acts speaks of the Proclamation of Jesus. The Epistles speak of the Explanation of Jesus. Revelation speaks of the Consummation of Jesus.

19 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary Virgin birth is the great divide in Christianity. Clearly, it is taught in Scripture – Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:20; Luke 1:35.

20 Isaiah 7:14 (NASB) 14  Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.

21 Matthew 1:20 (NASB) 20  But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

22 Luke 1:35 (NASB) 35  The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.

23 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary Virgin birth is the great divide in Christianity. Clearly, it is taught in Scripture – Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:20; Luke 1:35. Until 150 years ago, it was universally believed! It has been hotly debated since then!

24 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary What does this mean? Jesus was born by direct action of God. No man was involved. Jesus had a human mother but no earthly father. Therefore, Jesus is fully man and fully divine (God) – not 100% man and 100% God. Therefore, Jesus is without sin!

25 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary Three conditions to be met as Savior The Savior must be a man. The Savior must be an infinite man – God. The Savior must be sinless – innocent.

26 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary How did it happen? It was an absolute miracle. Luke 1:35 uses the term “overshadow” from Exodus 40:35.

27 Exodus 40:35 (NASB) 35  Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

28 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary How did it happen? It was an absolute miracle. Luke 1:35 uses the term “overshadow” from Exodus 40:35. Same word is used in Psalm 91:4 and the “covering of wings.”

29 Psalm 91:4 (NASB) 4  He will cover you with His pinions, And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.

30 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary What difference does it make? Biblical authority forces us to believe all or nothing! It is what the Bible teaches about God and Salvation. How can we believe in a resurrection if we can’t believe in a virgin birth? Necessary for Salvation – 2 Cor. 5:21; Romans 5:6

31 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NASB) Romans 5:6 (NASB)
21  He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Romans 5:6 (NASB) 6  For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

32 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary The virgin birth is directly connected to and necessary for the resurrection. You can’t play “pick your miracle.” The virgin birth forces us off the fence about Jesus.

33 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Suffered Under Pontius Pilate Why is this in the Creed? The Creed teaches us that Jesus was born to die – it goes from birth straight to death with nothing in between. Suffering does not begin on the cross, but leads to the cross – Isaiah 53:3.

34 Isaiah 53:3 (NASB) 3  He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

35 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Suffered Under Pontius Pilate Who killed Jesus? Was it Pilate? It is a fact of time and history. He is representative of us. He asked the ultimate question “What is truth?” We all did – Isaiah 53:3-6!

36 Isaiah 53:3-6 (NASB) 4  Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5  But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6  All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.

37 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Suffered Under Pontius Pilate Who killed Jesus? Was it Pilate? It is a fact of time and history. He is representative of us. He asked the ultimate question “What is truth?” We all did – Isaiah 53:3-6! Ultimately, God did – Acts 4:27-28; John 10:17-18!

38 Acts 4: (NASB) 27  For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28  to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.

39 John 10: (NASB) 17  For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life so that I may take it again. 18  No one has taken it away from Me, but I lay it down on My own initiative. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This commandment I received from My Father.”

40 What Does the Creed Say?
God did all of this before the foundation of the earth – Isaiah 53:10.

41 Isaiah 53:10 (NASB) 10  But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.

42 What Does the Creed Say? Part 2
Suffered Under Pontius Pilate Conclusion to “Who killed Jesus?” God the Father planned it. God the Son embraced it. We all did it, but …. God was always in control! His timing His planning His doing
