1 Sustainability Center Data Collection
ET 494 Advisor: Cris Koutsougeras By: Vaughn Ferrara, Ra’Najawhan Poullard, and Deuel Vaughn

2 Intro The sustainability center is all about making the campus more environmentally friendly. They have many methods of accomplishing this. Solar Panels Photo Voltaic- Solar to energy Solar thermal- Solar to heat water Geothermal- heat transfer of water in pond Wind power Build system to collect this data

3 Purpose Our goal is to use off-the-shelf technology to design a data communication system that can be used on the existing mechanical apparatus to facilitate the data collection and pertinent controls.

4 What equipment is currently being used
Power meter Acuvim II series Solar panels Non tracking Photo Voltaic Tracking Photo Voltaic Solar Thermal

5 Where are the solar panels located
2 Positions of solar panels around Southeastern Campus Sustainability Center Physical Plant (Tracking) Kinesiology Building (Solar Thermal) Biology Building (Solar Thermal) 1 3 4

6 What we have Access to:

7 Features of power meters
See real time data Trend logging Alarms Waveform Capture 3 Phase or single Phase

8 Acuvim II series Power meter web Server

9 Power meter data Power Meters Embedded Web Server Communications
3 Phase or Single Phase Waveform Capture Trend Logging Internal Memory Alarms Power Xpert Meter 2280 Yes HTTP, HTTPS, Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP, BACnet/IP, SNMP, SMTP, NTP. Single Phase, and 3 Phase 768 MB Power logic ION7550 RTU  No DNP3  Modbus  TCP/IP  Telnet  ION  10 MB Acuvim II Ethernet, Profibus-Dp, BACnet, Rs485 8 MB Power Scout Modbus/BACnet MasterSlave, BACnet IP, ModBus TCp over Ethernet None or N/A OWL Intuition-PV Transmits over frequency to node gateway that connect over Ethernet Single Phase Only N/A EmonPi Ethernet or Wi-Fi Single Phase and 3 Phase

10 Technology Non intrusive CT sensor (Current Transformer)
Similar to Voltage transformer There are two types of CT’s, a ring core and a split core

11 Networking The Internet of Things Concept (IoT)
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) Network of nodes that cooperatively sense and control the environment

12 Wireless Sensor Networks
Includes the following: Sensor Nodes- gathers sensory information Actuator Node- converts electrical control signals to physical actions Gateway- Sends the data back and forth to the internet Client- Gives users access to data

13 Things to look for in Network
Reliability Real Time Capable Energy Efficiency Security

14 Networking Options Developed By: Use Markets Examples
BACnet Modbus LonWorks Developed By: ASHRAE Modicon Inc. Echelon Corporation/ Motorola Use Communication across devices Connection between devices Networking devices through power lines, fiber optics, and other media Markets Industrial, Transportation, Energy Management, Building Automation, Regulatory and health and safety HVAC, Lighting, Life Safety, Access Controls, transportation and maintenance Home automation, industrial, transportation, and public utility control networks. Examples Boiler Control, Tank Level Measurements Tasks such as request temperature reading, send status alarm, or fan schedule Security, lighting systems, HVAC, machine control, manufacturing, metering Transmission Modes Ethernet, IP, MS/TP, Zigbee ASCII, RTU, TCP/IP MS/TP, network, SNVT Costs Low; No charge for usage or licensing fees High (proprietary); Limited users (exclusive to actual members;  mostly manufacturers)

15 Done so far Looked at what subsystems the Sustainability already has in place What equipment is being currently used Researched what options were available on today's market Research networking concepts Looked into what other business have done similar concepts Narrowed down what meters to use

16 This Semester Deliverables:
Finish research on the remaining software and networking devices. Design our own system that uses newer and better technology. Determine the efficiency of the system. Determine how and where will we store the data. Compare efficiency with current system at the Sustainability Center.

17 Timeline The figure was acquired via Microsoft Project
