6 Most Recent Crime May 15,2005 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Duncan killed Brenda Groene, her boyfriend Mark McKenzie and her 13-year-old son Slade Groene. All three were beaten to death with a hammer. The two youngest children, 9-year-old Dylan and 8-year-old Shasta, were missing. Seven weeks later, police arrested Duncan at a Denny’s restaurant in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Shasta was alive and with him at the time of his arrest. He had molested her and her brother for several weeks at different campsites while hiding out, and he eventually murdered Dylan. Dylan’s body was found in a makeshift campsite in the Lolo National Forest near St. Regis, Montana. After this crime, admitted he kidnapped Anthony Martinez, 10, from behind his Beaumont, California, home. Raped and killed him on April 4,1997. Also, confessed to the murders of Sammiejo White, 11, and her half-sister Carmen Cubias,9, who vanish on July 6, 1996, after leaving the Crest Motel in Seattle to panhandle. (no charge on this crime)

7 Evidence Brought Against Crime
Waitress at a Denny’s restaurant in Coeur d’Alene reported they saw Shasta with Duncan on July 2, 2005. This is where and when he got arrested. Shasta gave an interview about the murders of her mother, two older brothers and her mother’s fiancé. In Duncan’s red Jeep Cherokee he was driving at the time of the arrest, he had dark gloves, the night-vision goggles, a video camcorder, a 12-gauge shotgun, and a red shotgun shell. A gas station employee in Kellogg, near Coeur d’Alene, suspected a girl wandering around the gas station might have been Shasta, but did not confront her, as nothing appeared out of the ordinary. The employee and her manager notified authorities after reviewing surveillance camera footage and seeing Duncan and Shasta in the video. On July 4,2005, investigators found human remains at a remote makeshift campsite in the Lolo National Forest near St. Regis, Montana. The remains were sent to FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia for DNA testing and were positively identified as Dylan Groene. Confessed to murders.

8 Sentence Pleaded guilty to kidnapping Dylan and Shasta and to Dylan’s murder. Given three death sentences and three more life terms Given two consecutive life sentences for 1997 murder of Anthony Martinez after pleading guilty for the Martinez murder. All together, 3 death sentences and 5 life sentences. Still alive today and is in the U.S. penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.

9 Theory There are two theories that best explain the behavior of Duncan. The first is Differential-Association Theory which states that people’s behavior is largely determined by the company they keep. When Duncan was young, his two sisters molested him, which let him learn how to molest people. This caused him to think it is not bad to rape people. These thoughts produced him to do his first two rapes. The second theory that best explains the behavior of Duncan is the Labeling Theory. The Labeling Theory explains that when labels are applied by people powerful enough to impose their standards on society, it can have an effect on the individual that is labeled to act the way they are labeled. Duncan is an example of secondary deviance where the individuals accept their label. Duncan was labeled a sex offender by the police and court. This label allowed him to do more sex offender crimes because he was already labeled to be a sex offender. These labels caused him to do the rest of his crimes after he was labeled a sex offender. To conclude, Duncan had the two theories of Differential- Association Theory and the Labeling Theory that best explain Duncan deviant behavior.
