8 Activity 1: Create a Quiz NOW
Go to Find an Item Teacher homepage We are going to explore the home page from top to bottom Show the My Classroom Section menu For every “section” that you teach, you can drill-down into the following: Reports 8

9 Find your Item or Color code and key in this slide match the theme used to designate materials within Schoolnet (there is one more level, the Curricular Unit, omit this) Facilitator should use a specific example from within School of a unit with lessons, resources and assessments linked (this can be something already in Schoolnet or created for training purposes). Instructional Units can be created by teachers and used to group together a series of related lesson plans and resources. Instructional Units can cover a specific unit or time of content. Lesson Plans are daily instructional plans that address a theme or topic related to a particular instructional unit. Resources are additional materials that supplement a lesson and/or unit. These could include presentations used for instruction, video clips, documents, worksheets, activities for students, or anything else that could be used to improve instruction and learning within the classroom. Assessments (documents) in the classrooms module are intended to be performance based or some for evaluating students learning that would not necessarily be created as an assessment that can be taken by a student within Schoolnet. Assessments or items created within the assessment admin module are not linked to instructional materials in the classrooms module. **Note to share with participants: Instructional units and lesson plans must be saved to My Materials to be available for scheduling in the Lesson Planner. 9

14 Schedule a Test Discuss Item Types 14

15 Assign Test to Sections/Students
Take class through item creation process. This series of slides are to be used as a guide through this process.   Talk about the selection of the Subject – Grade Range – Standard Alginment Talk through item development 15

16 Test Detail Item creation process
Most commonly used option is saving the item ONLY TO ME. Co-Authoring is an option that will be discussed later?? Take a look at the item to ensure it displays the way you want Show a preview – this is what the students see 16

17 Activity 2: Create an Express Test
Create a 5-10 question Express Test of your choice [Trainer Notes:] Use 10 minutes to have the class create an item of their own 17

18 Student Testing Walk the class through the path to “find” the item they just created Talk about searching for items Compound search to filter through large numbers of items in a search result 18

19 Proctor Dashboard = Real Time Data Streaming
This section of the training steps you through creation of an Express Test –Your goal is to create a test that the “students” in THIS class WILL TAKE!  While they are taking the test, you will be projecting the Proctor Dashboard displaying the live feed of data from their tests.  This is VERY POWERFUL for them to see. 19

20 Class Progress Bring up the Proctor Dashboard to display WHILE the students are taking the test.  It has a LOT of impact when folks can see that this is REAL TIME data being fed into Schoolnet.  So be SURE to do this WHILE they are taking it so they can see the results populating as they answer each question. Assessment Admin>Dashboard>Locate the test created>Actions: Proctor Dashboard OR Assessment Admin>Find a Test>Locate Test>Click on Proctor Dashboard

28 Formatting Considerations
Avoid using: Multiple spaces (use either an indent or tab) Multiple spaces do not translate well into HTML code. “Copied and pasted” columns The columns of text will turn into one column in HTML code. Keep it simple Simple can be elegant—the more complex the formatting is, the more issues that may arise when copying and pasting. 28

29 Activity 3: Practice Create a lesson plan and attach/link a resource that is already available within the system Naming convention – MM/DD/YYYY-lesson- initials Ex: 06/27/2016-lesson-TK Submit your lesson plan to the School Bank for approval

30 How to Share with Other Teachers: Submit a Lesson Plan for Approval
Share materials with other teachers

31 Approval Process Designated administrators can approve materials or request revisions. Approved materials are available to other teachers. On this page you can preview online test. Return to Test Details, Add Instructions if needed, Edit (Actions) as needed, and follow path to Schedule (Like Express Test), Accept Quick Assignment, Save 31

32 Create an Instructional Unit

33 Practice Activity 4: Practice Create an Instructional Unit
Find the Lesson that you created earlier in this session and link it to this unit Fast Alignments Choose a subject and grade range for your material, then quickly find and align the standards you want using our flexible standards search and browse tool. Your alignments will always show at the top of the page, no matter how far down you scroll. Expand the levels of standards until you find the standard you want. Subject and grade should default to what you enter in these fields on tab 1, but you can change them as needed to attach all relevant standards. Flexible content Type into a pre-configured material design template, add multiple attachments, insert a link to a website - one instructional material can contain all types of content! Enter content in a variety of ways. You can use a template, enter content directly into the text box, upload a file as an attachment, or link to a URL. Use the menus within the Content tab whenever possible. NOTE: You can only choose one content format for each individual material that you create. For example, if you choose district template, you cannot also choose File to upload a file. You can upload files as resources to be attached later. This HTML Editor is the same as the one that is available in Assessment Admin. Use the HTML Editor to: Change formatting Access the math/science equation editor Include images Insert a table Paste from Word (use keyboard short cuts) Linking materials Use the linked materials search window to find and select other instructional materials to link to your lesson. (Tip: sort your search results by rating to locate the highest rated materials for linking!) Remind the participants about the earlier chart that explained the structure of materials (what types are linked to others) You have the option of creating a new material (review this process as well) or linking an existing material. When linking, be sure that material is linked (at the top of the screen in the screenshot on the left you see the red text indicated there are no linked materials and the arrow is pointing to what it looks like when a material is attached) Instructional units – Attach lesson plans, resources, and assessments Lesson plans – Attach resources and assessments Can search in Public Materials Banks, My Materials, or create and link new materials; new resources become separate material 33

34 Discussion In your classroom how would you create lessons and resources and group them together as an instructional unit?

35 Student Workspaces Understand the student capabilities to:
Create a new portfolio Add and edit content Make and view comments Understand the teacher capabilities to: Locate individual student workspaces Create portfolios/workspaces View and manage content Add and view comments to student workspaces

36 Teacher Access

37 Section Chooser When you copy and paste content into Schoolnet, it is best to use the keyboard shortcuts (like control C, control V). 37

38 Viewing a Student’s Portfolio

39 Student Access

40 Navigate to Workspaces (Launch) Create a new portfolio
Activity 5: Practice Practice Log in as a student Navigate to Workspaces (Launch) Create a new portfolio Upload work items (1-2)

41 Comment View Teacher View Student View 41

42 Why use Workspaces Use the student workspace for classroom projects or for portfolios that stay with the student over time. Student-created portfolios can be used to demonstrate a student's work, aptitude, experience, or growth in one or more of the student’s classes. Teachers assign students the task of creating end-of- term portfolios to showcase exemplary work across classes. Students add text and attach rich media to these portfolios to showcase their best work. The portfolios stay with the students from one school year to the next so that the students’ new teachers can benefit from viewing a showcase of the students’ work. Create Lesson Plan 42

43 How do you see yourself using this tool in your classroom?
Activity 6: Practice Practice Make a comment on one of your portfolios for your teacher to respond to. Discussion How do you see yourself using this tool in your classroom? How could this hold your student accountable for their work?

44 Teacher Data: Learning Outcomes
You will learn to: Understand how the home page gets you to all the data you need/want on a daily basis 44

45 Student Data on the Home Page: Reports
Understand and explain the method implemented at the site; if there is no sharing method currently, discuss all possible options For teachers, the link is labeled Submit to School by default, but some sites are configured to bypass the school, and thus have a link labeled Submit to District instead Once you submit a lesson: The material goes first to an approver If approved, it is available to other teachers at your school and can be submitted to the district When approved at the district level, it is available district-wide You can’t edit the material once it’s approved, but you can make editable copies of it Let participants know if an approval process is in place and whether the materials go to the school or district; let teachers know not to submit materials unless somebody is approving them 45
