10 My IELTS score wasn’t high enough (5
My IELTS score wasn’t high enough (5.5) so I decided to study at Columbia College first. In my opinion, it is better to study at a college first, even if your meet the University’s English requirement. Passing a language exam is different from studying in an English-speaking environment. At SFU, most first year classes have around 100 or even more students in one lecture room. You are expected to do all the work on your own. It can be a bit overwhelming if you are coming from China directly after graduating from your high school. Columbia College offers classes in a much smaller size. You can easily reach out to your professor and get to know your classmates. The college also offers resources in other areas to help you succeed. For example, student advisors and tutors can help you with academic related questions. You can go to see the nurse if you don’t feel well. The college is more like a small community compare to a university. The tuition is lower in Columbia College as well. You can save quite bit if you complete the first two years in the college. Columbia College is a great place for you if you come from China directly after high school. It will help you to be more prepared for your university life Eva Yan, China
