Junior Secondary (Years 7-9) Philosophy
Our philosophy is based upon the provision of a seamless curriculum supported by strong, positive relationships with increased opportunities and improved learning outcomes for students. Our aim is to maximise student enthusiasm for learning, build self-esteem and resilience so that school and learning is a positive and meaningful experience for all.

Junior Secondary provides the link between upper primary and senior secondary, with a focus on:
Trying new subjects Working with different teaching styles and class groups Exploring different learning spaces, e.g., science laboratory Building independence as a learner Literacy and numeracy

Basis for effective family-school partnerships
Partnerships value diversity and can involve other community organisations Families and schools want the best for their children. Families and schools value quality teaching and respect teachers’ expertise. Families are the first and continuing educators of their children. Family–school partnerships are based on mutual responsibility and respect.

The Role of the Year Coordinator
Year Coordinators play an important role in the success of students at Ferny Grove. From the start of high school until Year 12 Graduation they support the full engagement of students in all facets of school life. Year Coordinator with cohort until the end of Year 12 Support the personal and emotional development of students Act as a point of contact with parents in regard to issues that may impact on student wellbeing and success at school. Provide advice to students and parents on where to go for additional support e.g. Guidance, ‘Chappies’, School Based Youth Health Nurse Provide opportunities for social development and participation, e.g., camps, social events Maintain high standards of uniform, attendance and behaviour Monitor term and semester reports in relation to behaviour and effort working with students, parents and teachers to ensure improvement Engage students in building year level and school spirit Guide year level community service initiative Encourage student participation in vast array of extra-curricula activities Contact early and often!

Ferny Grove State High School students are supported to develop their own group identity within the broader school community, and have a strong sense of belonging through ownership of their school and their learning. ENG MATHS SCI HIST/HUM HPE Electives SPORT PASTORAL CARE YEAR 7 4 3 2 1 2 lessons / week / semester 4 electives each semester YEAR 8 YEAR 9 3 lessons / week/ semester 2 electives each semester Year 7 and 8 electives– MUSIC / ART / DRAMA / HEALTH AND TECHNOLOGY DESIGN / INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY DESIGN / INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY / GERMAN / INDONESIAN. Students will study all of these electives across the course of year 7 and 8. Each will run for a semester with the exception of languages, which run for a semester each year. In Year 9, students will choose all 4 of their electives.

Student Wellbeing builds a foundation of success by embedding social and personal competencies across all facets of school life, incorporating a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition and exercise. At Ferny Grove: A smooth transition from primary school with strong regard for student wellbeing will: improve academic performance; increase student participation in school activities; enable students to experience success; and foster enjoyment at high school. Focal points include: Parent communication and information sharing – , phone calls, website updates, Facebook, Year 7 welcome events Teacher awareness - primary school observations and Junior Secondary team visits to talk about each 2018 student

Student Wellbeing builds a foundation of success by embedding social and personal competencies across all facets of school life, incorporating a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition and exercise. At Ferny Grove: Relationships are key and are supported through: daily contact with a Form Group teacher and core teachers who will monitor student progress and wellbeing; Senior Buddies to mentor students and be a point of contact; Year 11 Peer Mentors providing friendly support and problem solving Senior staff support, e.g. Deputy Principals, Guidance Officers, Head of Junior Secondary & Year Level Coordinator; Student Support Services, e.g., ‘Chappies’, Defence Force Transition Mentor, School Based Youth Health Nurse Parental contact ‘early and often!’ Dedicated campus space for each year level as well as access to shared facilities, e.g., canteen, hall, Resource Centre, ovals Learning together - informative guest speakers skilled in the area of adolescent development to provide insight for parents and school staff, e.g., Michelle Mitchell, Michael Jeh, Eric Frangenheim

At Ferny Grove: Orientation programs- at the end of this year to become familiar with the school layout, experience a range of daily activities and build confidence; and at the beginning of 2018 to provide opportunities to develop relationships with peers, staff and Senior Buddies, and settle into a routine Student Wellbeing (pastoral care) program promoting and supporting: social and emotional skills resilience learning capacity core school values – Respect, Learning, Community, Creativity

Organisation and routine are the keys to success. Happy kids are successful learners. Relationships eats strategy for breakfast! Resilience and personal responsibility are important, but name everything just in case… Communicate early and often. We never stop learning

Enrolment Process Ferny Grove has an Enrolment Management Plan (EMP)and catchment area All parents wishing to enrol their students will need to complete an Expression of Interest for Student Enrolment, whether they reside in or out of catchment. Documentation required for all EOIs is: Copy of student’s birth certificate Copy of most recent school report Copy of NAPLAN report “In Catchment” families need TWO proof of residency notices, one from each source below: One primary source: a current lease agreement, a current driver’s licence or unconditional sale agreement; AND One secondary source: a utility bill (electricity, gas) or rates notice showing this same address and parent’s/legal guardian’s name. Once the Expression of Interest form and all supporting documentation is received, applicants will receive a letter from the school within two to three weeks stating that the application is Accepted, Rejected or placed on a Waiting List. Parents of students accepted into Ferny Grove SHS will receive an enrolment pack with all documents required for enrolment.

Enrolment Interview Bookings
Enrolment Process Tonight, parents of students who have been accepted for enrolment will be given an enrolment pack and can book an enrolment interview. Parents who haven’t submitted an expression of interest form will be given one to complete but will not receive an enrolment pack or be given an interview time until their application has been reviewed against our Enrolment Management Plan. For interested parents and students not able to make it tonight, two after school tours will be held on June 14 & 19. Further tours will be arranged as needed in semester two.
