The verb to be has three forms - am, are, and is. I am tall. You We They are He She It is

3 Negative Form & Contractions
If you want to negate your sentence, simply add not after the verb to be. I am I’m not asleep. He She It Is He’s OR He isn’t You We They are You’re They aren’t

4 Read this letter and find eight mistakes.
Hi Serge, You’s interested in computer games! I’m interested in them too. My favorite game are Polar Ice, but I amn’t very good at it. My other hobby is baseball. You no are interested in sports. Why? Baseball is a great game. It very popular here. My friends and I are always in the ballpark after work. They is good hitters. I’m a pretty good catcher. We is both students. 5 Questions with to be. Yes/No Questions - move the verb to be to the front of the sentence: I am late Am I late? It is cold. Is it cold? Note: You can use contractions in answers with NO. No, you’re not late. No, it isn’t cold. OR No, it’s not cold.

6 Wh- Questions The verb to be follows the Wh- word: Who is this man?
What are you doing? When they coming? Where my book? Why am I here? How driving?

7 Read this quiz and find six mistakes.

8 End of Lesson One At your table, come up with two affirmative, two negative, and two questions using the different forms of the verb to be. Be sure to make mistakes in half of these sentences. Exchange with another table. The first group to find all mistakes WINS!

I am not talking to you. My friends are not studying. Michelle isn’t playing piano. Students aren’t watching TV at home. Negative PP = to be + NOT + verb + ing

12 Find ten mistakes in this email:

W + to be + subject + verb + ing = ? Homework:write a dialogue between best friends using the Present Progressive form Who am I calling? When are you coming? Where is she going? What eating? Why people screaming? How Susan doing?
