4 Are we living in BC years or AD years?

5 Think of a number line with negative numbers
Think of a number line with negative numbers. As negative numbers get closer to positive numbers, they grow smaller. In BC years, the timeline numbers get smaller as they get closer to today. BC years get smaller this way AD years get larger this way BC AD There is no year BC simply changes to AD 1 at midnight on Dec. 31/Jan. 1.

6 Let’s practice! Using the timeline below, solve these problems.
If Mrs. Wright buys a chariot in 10 BC and sells it in 5 BC, how many years did she own it? BC AD

7 Let’s practice! Using the timeline below, solve these problems.
If Mrs. Wright buys a chariot in 10 BC and sells it in 5 BC, how many years did she own it? From 10 BC to 5 BC is 5 years. 10 – 5 = 5. When both numbers are BC numbers, you simply add or subtract like positive numbers. BC AD

8 Want more of a challenge? Read on, bubbaloo!
If Mrs. Hinds-Brown collects dead bugs from AD 5 to AD 20, how many years did she collect them? BC AD

9 Want more of a challenge? Read on, bubbaloo!
If Mrs. Logan collects dead bugs from AD 5 to AD 20, how many years did she collect them? From AD 5 to AD 20 is 15 years. 20 – 5 = 15. When both numbers are AD numbers, you simply add or subtract like positive numbers. BC AD

10 But…what if one number is BC and one is AD? Eeek!
If Mr. Ames shaves his head in 10 BC and let’s his hair grow without a trim until AD 10, how long is that? That looks challenging, but it is actually...simple! BC AD

11 But…what if one number is BC and one is AD? Eeek!
If Mr. Ames shaves his head in 10 BC and let’s his hair grow without a trim until AD 10, how long is that? When finding out years from BC to AD, you simply add from 10 BC to year 1 BC, then add from AD 1 to AD 10. BC AD

12 But…what if one number is BC and one is AD? Eeek!
If Mr. Ames shaves his head in 10 BC and let’s his hair grow without a trim until AD 10, how long is that? Watch: 10 BC to 1 BC is 10 years. AD 1 to AD 10 is 10 years. = 20 BC AD 10 10

13 Let’s up the stakes! Look at the timeline below.
Can you find the BC years? Can you find the AD years? First, where does 1 BC meet AD 1? And that’s it! And these are AD years. These are all BC years. In BC years, the timeline numbers get smaller as they get closer to today.

14 You’re up, again: how many years from 2300 BC to 1900 BC?

15 Or just count the intervals from 2300 to 1900.

16 You’re up again: how many years from 700 BC to AD 100?
700 to 1 = 700 years to 100 = 100 years. = 800 years.

17 Or, you can count the intervals again.

18 BC = Before Christ (that is, years before his birth) AD = Anno Domini “In the year of our Lord”

19 That’s right! Common Era!
B.C.E and C.E. The individuals who created the system of B.C. and A.D. were Christian scholars. Today, a new system has been created that is not religious in nature. The important thing to remember is that the dates are exactly the same. B.C. (before Christ) is referred to as B.C.E. (before Common Era). A.D. (anno Domini) is referred to as C.E. What do you think C.E. is? That’s right! Common Era!

20 Other important terms to know about timelines:
Decade: A unit of time that of ten years Century: A unit of time of one hundred years Millennium: A unit of time of one thousand years Circa: A Latin word meaning “about” or “around”
