1 Place Values of Metric Prefixes
The Metric System The metric system is a measurement system based on our decimal (base 10) number system. Other countries and all scientists and engineers use the metric system for measurement. Place Values of Metric Prefixes Kilo- Hecto- Deca- Unit deci- centi- milli- k h dk d c m Thousand Hundred Ten One Tenth Hundredth Thousandth km kg kL hm hg hL dkm dkg dkL g L dm dg dL cm cg cL mm mg mL

2 Meters Meters measure length or distance
One millimeter is about the thickness of a dime. One centimeter is about the width of a large paper clip A meter is about the width of a doorway A kilometer is about six city blocks or 10 football fields. 1.6 kilometers is about 1 mile

3 Gram Grams are used to measure mass or the weight of an object.
A milligram weighs about as much as a grain of salt. 1 gram weighs about as much as a small paper clip. 1 kilogram weighs about as much as 6 apples or 2 pounds.

4 Liters Liters measure liquids or capacity.
1 milliliter is about the amount of one drop A kiloliter would be about liter bottles of pop

8 Ethan lives at one end of Park Avenue
Ethan lives at one end of Park Avenue. Brian lives at the other end of the avenue. It is 5.8 kilometers from one end of Park Avenue to the other. If Ethan walks 2.79 kilometers toward Brian’s house, how many more METERS does he have to walk to get there? Aaron and Noah wanted to have a contest to see which of their paper airplanes could fly the longest distance. Aaron’s plane flew 4 meters. Noah’s plane flew 79 centimeters. How much further did Aaron’s plane fly in METERS?

9 Relationship between mass and volume
density: a property of a substance that describes how much matter the substance contains per unit volume; typical units are grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3). force: an action, such as a push or a pull, that has the ability to change the motion of an object, such as to start it moving, stop it, or turn it. pressure: force per unit area with units of Pa (N/m2) or psi (lb/in2) or atm; acts equally in all directions within a liquid or a gas.

10 Accuracy and precision
Measurements that are not accurate could lead you to the wrong conclusion. If a measurement is not precise, you may not be able to tell the difference between agreement and disagreement.
