6 Malignant Melanoma

7 MM Most deadly type of skin cancer
In 2016, it is estimated that 10,130 deaths will be attributed to melanoma — 6,750 men and 3,380 women. Approximately 75 percent of skin cancer deaths are from melanoma.

8 Malignant Melanoma 1 in 79 chance
Melanoma rates in the United States doubled from to 2011. It is estimated that 144,860 new cases of melanoma, 68,480 noninvasive (in situ) and 76,380 invasive, will be diagnosed in the U.S. in 2016. Invasive melanoma is projected to be the fifth most common cancer for men (46,870 cases) and the seventh most common cancer for women (29,510 cases) in 2016.

9 •Melanoma frequently develops in a mole or suddenly appears as a new dark spot on the skin. •Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. •Knowing the ABCDE warning signs of melanoma can help you find an early melanoma. The five-year survival rate for people whose melanoma is detected and treated before it spreads to the lymph nodes is 98 percent. Five-year survival rates for regional and distant stage melanomas are 63 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
