2 The Delft Method Programme introduction lesson:
Language learning with the DM Course materials & how to study Classes, tests, etc. Procedure introduction test Questions + visit classroom

3 Delft Method of language learning
NATURAL UNCONVENTIONAL SPEEDY (300 word forms a week) INTERESTING

4 The Delft Method Input, that’s what you need
! No conscious knowledge, but skills

5 Language learning is not difficult …
Lego versus puzzles

6 Around 20 hrs a week (including classes)
But it takes time! Around 20 hrs a week (including classes)

7 What materials do you need for the course?
Textbook book + online / audio CDs and cd-rom € 65,00 extra: Delftse methode app: App Store or Google Play € 19,99 Content text book (Copies are not allowed!!!): 43 Texts Word lists on paper in English, German, French, Spanish, Turkish + Arabic (26 languages on CD-Rom / online / app) Texts with blanks + exercises Grammar Available in book Industrial Design or online: or Boek erbij tekst Woordenlijsten Gatentekst Grammatica Oefenboek niet verplicht. Biedt extra oefening (met NL partner) > Verkrijgbaar bij… Optional: Nederlands voor buitenlanders Oefenboek (exercise book)

8 How to study? Study goal:
understand a spoken text without help and being able to use the words actively Study with book + audio CD’s and/or CD-ROM (or online version) Go through the text: step by step first with all help, and gradually less help 4, 5, 6, 7 times ….. 1 text takes hours!! Devote your time mainly to listening, reading and repeating out loud what you hear (not too much on writing) Begrijp de tekst helemaal! Stap voor stap met boek + cd Of boek en cd-rom

9

10 Steps 1 & 2 Step 1: with text sentence by sentence translation

11 Steps 3 & 4 Step 3: without text sentence by sentence
listen and repeat pay attention to details Step 4 without pauses

12 Step 5: test After studying the text properly! Listening & writing
> 70-80% correct Luister en typ x/x woorden correct Minder dan 80% is een stap terug

13 Step 6: excercise Same exercise as in the book
Gap fill text + feedback After having studied the text! De gaten test doe je pas nadat je de tekst goed kent! Denk aan een gesprek in een drukke straat: ook al mis je een paar woorden, je kunt toch begrijpen wat iemand zegt. > kennis van de taal Wanneer je goed gestudeerd hebt, ben je goed voorbereid voor de les. Geen reden voor angst.

14 Preparing for the conversation
Step 7 Preparing for the conversation After each text: Questions (vragen) Speaking (spreken) Speaking about the text Summary Questions in the text

15 Some do’s and dont’s Do not fill in the gap text in the book
Do not write translations IN the text Do not spend time copying the text Do not learn the texts by heart Understanding is not enough: have attention for form, put the text under the microscope! Use all senses simultaneously: read + listen + speak Study actively: USE the words, make your own sentences Play with the text: change the subject/order/…

16 The classes Learning by doing: Classes are mainly devoted to conversation (not much grammar explanation, but application) Only Dutch, from day 1 Conversations on topics in the text Knowledge of the text is essential (one text takes 2-3 hrs to prepare!) Are fun and interesting You don’t learn only from speaking yourself, but also from listening to other students Do participate in the conversation, don’t wait for your turn!

17 Daily listening tests Listening test about each text, after class
Bring your own headphones! Login: tbm-langXXX, Welkom01 (you will get this from your teacher) No book, phones, paper etc. allowed (it is an official test and part of your grade) Minimum result of 70% necessary Less then 70% = stop, do it again next time login (username: TBM-LANG123, password Welkom01) type the words you heard – feedback: “x words are correct” after ca. 10 sentences: total result in % result 80% or more: next test. Result less then 80%: stop ½ uur de tijd, 80% score. De computer houdt bij welke teksten je gehaald hebt. Je kunt niet verder tot je voor een tekst bent geslaagd.

18 Other tests 3 Gap fill tests: Like the ones in the book (but with different gaps) During classes (first 10 minutes) 20 gaps from 4 texts (randomly selected) 2 Writing assignments Answering questions about the topic of the text (not about the text itself) Make new simple Dutch sentences with the words that you have learned During the time for the computer test No book, telephone, paper etc. allowed Make sure your listening test is closed If you have the listening test open or something on your table, you will get a “fail” login (username: TBM-LANG123, password Welkom01) type the words you heard – feedback: “x words are correct” after ca. 10 sentences: total result in % result 80% or more: next test. Result less then 80%: stop ½ uur de tijd, 80% score. De computer houdt bij welke teksten je gehaald hebt. Je kunt niet verder tot je voor een tekst bent geslaagd. Belangrijke informatie voor jezelf: heb ik goed genoeg gestudeerd?
